I have a 1994 Kawasaki 220 Bayou, it has started to leak gas. When I turn off the fuel tap, it doesnt leak. When I leave the gas tap open, it leaks gas. It seems to be leaking from under the carberator somewhere. What can I do to fix this problem? I really dont want to take it to the dealer. If I get some direction I may fix it myself or at least if I take it to the dealer, I will know more. Thanks.

Hi Chester,

A couple of thoughts....

You said when you leave the tap (petcock) open it leaks gas. How long of a time frame are we talking about?

Since the fuel is supplied via gravity, if the petcock is left open between rides, the fuel will leak out, since the carb bowl can only hold so much fuel. Once the bowl is full, the extra has to go somewhere, so it leaks out of the carb.

As a rule, if the ATV isn't going to be ridden again for more than hour, turn the petcock off...

If the leak is starting within a few minutes, then I would check the fuel line for cracks or other signs of deterioration. Or possibly the fuel line fitting on the carb may be cracked, allowing the fuel to leak out...

If you would like to check into getting a repair manual, follow this link...

I also think your 220 is a 93, not a 94. The 220 production stopped in 1993, according to my sources.

Hope this helps...

I have the Bayou 220 Model KLF 220 it is doing the same thing If I leave the fuel valve in the on positions in 2 minutes it starts to leak out of the tube coming out the bottom of the bowl. I call a local dealers parts department they told me to check the float inside the bowl it could be getting stuck and to check if the bowl needed cleaning. I took it all apart and cleaned it put it back together and it is still doing the same thing. Some how the float inside the bowl is suppose to keep it from leaking but I visually can see anything wrong with the float. Please help !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Doug,

If you have followed the suggestions from my first response, then this would be the next step....

The issue is probably in the fuel petcock, to verify this is a simple process.

Drain the fuel tank completely.

Remove the tank from your Bayou, you may need to remove the front fender assembly to do this.

With the tank off the quad, disconnect the fuel line.

Carefully remove the petcock from the tank. There is a threaded fitting pressed into the tank plastic, so move slowly when loosening it.

With the petcock removed, prepare to disassemble it. For most Kawasakis, there are two screws to remove.

Then the cover, with the lever, should come off the base.

Check for any debris inside. Sometimes very small gravel or stones can find their way in, keeping the petcock from closing completely.

If there is no debris inside, check the washer, if it is distorted or broken, it needs to be replaced, since that is probably where the leak is coming from.

Re assembly is following the steps in reverse.

When reinstalling the petcock to the tank, be sure to use some teflon tape.

If the leak continues, the surfaces may be warped or cracked, if that is the case, replace the petcock. Yhey are usually around 10-15 bucks.

Hope this helps.
