1914 Chicago American Giants, or another reason to join SABR

Posted on SABR L by my friend Kit

"At the most recent meeting of the Vancouver SABR group, a women brought a group of panorama photos, mostly of local amateur teams and teams in the Northwest League taken from 1910-1918. Among them was a photo of the Chicago American Giants. The team toured the Northwest that year and I will soon undertake a search of local papers to find accounts of games.

Larry Lester has helped in the identification of the players. So-far identified are Pete Hill, Bruce Petway, Rube Foster, Pop Lloyd, Jude Gans, Bill Gatewood, Bill Francis, LeRoy Grant and Pete Booker. There are four unidentified players in the photo.

My query is whether anyone knows of another photo of the 1914 American Giants. The owner is going to place it up for auction, but I hope to persuade her to permit its circulation and reprint for SABR members.

Off-list responses are fine.

Kit Krieger"

Max, I'll check my auction catalogs tomorrow and see what I can find. Sounds like a great find of photos.

The photo of the Chicago team is incredible--I think it's 7" x 16" or 18". I don't recall seeing a team photo before, and to find one taken in Vancouver BC is just incredible. It will be very interesting to see how this does at auction.

The other photos won't be in an auction
