Grip on Adirondack Willie Mays bat

I just purchased a Willie Mays Adirondack bat and it has a grip on it that I have never seen before. Maybe someone can tell me if it is original to the bat and what type of grip it is referred to. Any help would be appreciated.

I've seen that grip referred to as rattan.

I have a Sav-A-Bat Ken Boyer with a grip just like that one....it was not only used by Adirondack.

I believe it's a fiberglass grip. I remember seeing these as a kid in the 70's. That's the first Adirondak I've seen with that type grip.

I actually remember using these bats as a kid as well. Wonder why they don't turn up more often- they really shouldn't be that scarce!
