Where to find pinbacks

January 29 2008 at 4:15 PM

I have found a precious few pinbacks at antique shows, several at the National, and many on ebay.

Where have most of your pins come from?

Paul, Where did most of your pins from the pre-ebay days come from?

Finding pins

January 29 2008, 4:27 PM

Mike

I don't actively collect them - so maybe I have about 75?

But, interestingly, I bought a really nice Brooklyn Dodger pennant which had a 'team pin' affixed.

It was a mini - I have quite a few team pins - but this one is smaller.

So, ya never know where one is gonna found one?

I have found many at small local shows - but I've seen many that are too new looking and the pin in the back isn't like the older types. I have very little expertise and am always incredulous when I see a pin.

Most of my pins came from local estates....except for two of the three Lincoln Western League pins which I found on ebay. I'm pretty sure the only other pin I've ever purchased on ebay was a Sioux City Soos pin.

Pounding the pavement. Antique shops, antigue shows, antique malls, sports shops, garage sales, networking among fellow hobbyists (I look out for "his" pennants, he looks out for "my" pins), sports shows, junk shops, fleas markets, and local auctions (maybe one pin among 500 lots of household items). Worst idea of all time: Place an ad in the classified section of USA Today. Ad cost something like several hundred dollars, I got ONE response, for one of those little enamel clutch-back give-away items. My hopes for snagging a 6" 1927 NY Yankees team head-shot pin were not fulfilled. [No, no such pin is known to exist. But a guy can dream, right?]

I have a bunch of pins -- mostly 50s/60s stadium pins and some sweet caporals -- if anyone is interesting in trading.

i already told of how i came across 3oo sweet caporals and 3o cracker jacks in a house in michigan, but the best one was my mom and dad were at an antique
auction and in the bottom of this pickle crock were about 15 morton pennant winner bread and buster brown bread detroit tiger pins including a cobb ,2 jennings, and 2 crawfords.
no one knew they were in the the crock but my mom and she bid $20 on the lot and won.
i'm happy to say all but 3 of those are in my collection now with the other two just waiting for another birthday to come along.

With pins it seems you gotta be patient and look in all the different avenues in order to pick up the ones you want. I have purchased pretty equally from ebay, private, large auction houses, and even at shows.

Some nice PM1s coming up for auction

I understand that Heritage has received a nice consignment of PM1 "Ornate Frame" pins for auction. Condition is said to be superlative. Details forthcoming in SCD.
