Richmond Braves 1966-2008

My wife and I went to the last game of the Richmond Braves today. For those that don't know the Braves AAA International League team is leaving town after 42 years. It's a terrible situation for the fans that have supported them for so many years but I can't blame the orginization. Hopefully we'll get a single A team in the next few years.

The highlight of the day for me personally was getting a photo with my favorite player from when I was a kid.

Tim

Losing triple-A isn't the worst thing in the world. Vancouver's team left after 1998, and we have had a short season class A team for the last seven years.

We've had new ownership, and the local owners are committed to fixing up the 1951 stadium (they've done a great job) and putting an entertaining product on the field.

Most of the fans can't tell the difference in quality, although to me, short season class A is like a mixture of triple A, with lots of T-ball moments thrown in.

Tim, Sorry to hear about your team leaving, but on a more positive note, I don't know if there is a better person on this earth than Dale Murphy. He has always been the epitome of class end sportsmanship. He has lived a life few could ever duplicate. Class act all the way.

Sorry to hear you have lost the Braves. I used to catch quite a few games in the 70s when I was in school in Virginia. I remember speaking to Luke Appling at a game once. He must have been in his sixties at the time. He really enjoyed taking in the Braves games and being remembered by fans. I had the good fortune to see the old timers game at RFK a few years later when Appling homered off Warren Spahn at age 75.
