Circa 1929 St. Louis Browns Hat

I recently acquired the attached circa 1929 Browns road cap in a private transaction. Acquired it from a guy I know that purchased a trunk of vintage clothes about 25 years ago. In the trunk was a WWI uniform and other clothes from the 1920s including this hat. Unfortunately he sold the WWI uniform years ago and does not recall the name that was written in them. Hat is of high quality but appears the tag is missing. I can't find a stiched name either. I don't do much in equipment but I bought the hat because I just liked the look of it. Can any of you equipment guys give me any thoughts about it or estimate of value.

Pat:

What a wonderful find! The Brownies wore this exact style between 1929 and 1933. So this cap was likely worn by a player who went up against the likes of Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, Grove, Simmons, and all the other American League greats of the era.

This is a beautiful example with really unique embroidery of the logo. A desirable piece, and one that rarely, if ever turns up. Caps from this era are incredibly difficult to find. I would estimate that this one would fetch $1,500 - $1,800 in a premier catalogue auction with a Mears LOA. Perhaps more, if you could attribute it to a specific player. Great post, and congrats!

Perhaps the WWI uniform is a clue. I guess you can't prove it, but perhaps they belonged to the same man. In that case, simply track down a list of MLB WWI veterans and see who (if any) from the list played/coached/managed for the Brownies between 1929-33.
