Professional Sports are considered entertainment. Considering the SEVEN (7) seasons of 1993/1994 throught 2000/2001 The Devils have won the Cup twice 94/95 & 99/00. Been in the finals and failed once 00/01. Missed the playoffs once 95/96. Been eliminated three times in the playoffs 96/97; 97/98 & 98/99. From an entertainment standpoint the low salary Devils have given the fans quite a bit os entertainment. They have even given the fans entertainment while signing or not signing players through their firm position often taken by Lou Lams. Few teams have given that much entertainment during the same period as the Devils, Avs and Red Wings come to mind. They sign players for big bucks and have had about the same results so Lou can't say we did it for less $$$$$.
As a Devils fan my frustration comes from believing that the Devils during that same 7 year period had the potential, that no other team had, which was to play in the SCF and win 2 TWO more cups. But they didn't because it seems they didn't have consistency and desire to win or was missing the star player to push them over the edge.
As for entertainment I watch other hockey teams play, by never miss a Devils game, unless it isn't televised then I listen to it. So I have been comitted to the Devils for more than entertainment. I get frustrated when they have one of the best and that player doesn't play his best. You know who! He is the only player that can steal or win a game singlehandedly. But I shouldn't fault him because many Devils don't have the desire to win every game and don't play their best. As a matter of fact they consistently do this as a team which is frustrating and amazing.
So because Lou doesn't spend the bucks to bring the big name players here for the entertainment of the fans and to sell the Devils to the NHL, Media and the Local Conn., NJ and NY Fans that buy seats and Devils merchandise doesn't surprise me.
The incoming revenue minus the low Devils expenses, equals as much profit as a big spending team and we get pretty good if not better entertainment from the Devils.
This doesn't mean as a Devils fan I won't still get frustrated with the Management, Team and Individual Players. I have the desire to win all the time, but I don't play, I watch, read and listen.
