Family history

My dad, Harold E. Van Niman, could speak Chinese quite well although he wouldn't tell anyone how he came by knowing this. He is deceased now, but wanted to know how I might go about finding out if he was in China with the Marines.

The service records I have been able to get show Pacfic time, Pelielu, but not China. Thanks for any direction anyone can give me with research. Kit
