Hazel eyes have color receptors for several colors

Hazel eyes result when there are no dominant genes for color so you get green, brown, and blue colors in one set of eyes. It often goes with the type of hair where you see an unusual number of colors on the same head without a dye bottle involved. It't almost like a human merle gene although people don't usual go quite as far as a red or blue merle Aussie.

You can however have eyes of two different colors.
