WHY DO YOU HAVE TO LOGIN, AND WAIT FOR YOUR POST TO BE APPROVED BEFORE IT APPEARS HERE???
(NOT ALL--BUT SOME OF THEM...)

Glad you asked that question!
Nobody hates more than I do to login at a site, nor to have to have my posts approved before they are actually posted to the site.
But the way things are on the Internet, I, and others, really have no choice anymore.

If I do not configure the site this way, every morning I find the site littered with spam, pervert postings, smut of all kinds. It takes a lot of time to remove all this junk. The alternative is to leave it as is--you wouldn't like that, folks--and it would soon render these sites/messageboards useless to all of us. I have to remove this stuff manually; I think the spammers are doing it by computer now, non-stop--so they have no problem keeping up with their business. I have close to 20 forums here on Network54 alone, so you can see why the spam would take up a lot of my time.

So that's why I had to arrange things this way.

Regretably, this has also resulted in many people just not posting here. And I hate to see that as well. Hopefully, many of you will take the time to read this and understand the problem--I want to see you all posting here again!
Thank you for your attention.

Still Looking And Waiting for reply from Jarheads who I served with at Camp Pendleton

I was stationed with the Disbursing Office at Staging Regiment, Camp Pendleton, CA. at the end of the Korean Conflict June 1953 until July 1954. Major H. Tupper was the Disbursing Officer, and I served with Glen Cooper, MSgt. Staging Regiment was later moved to Tent Camp II. I served there until August 3, 1954, and was transferred to Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, CA. where Major Tupper was then serving as the Disbursing Officer. While at Marine Corps Base I was attached to H.& S. Co. Capt. Burkett was the C.O. I was in charge of the discharge section for enlisted men at the Disbursing Office. I also served as an instructor at H.& S. Co., and was in the Marine Corps Base Honor Guard under Lt. Gaughn. I recall standing two honor guards; one for the Commandant General Lemuel Shepherd, and the other for the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Arleigh Burke. I was released from active duty in July of 1956.

"Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines"

Notwithstanding all the whys and wherefores, it is time that we (Marines) heed Col Sully's sage advice and begin ourselves to capitalize Soldier, Sailor, Airman, as well as Marine. The Marines were first to do so for themselves, at their own initiative, with a change to the MCPM way back sometime in the very early 1960s, as I recall. After a few years, or longer, others outside the Corps picked up on this and followed suit. It is only fitting that we follow through on this and begin to practice this "same respect" spoken of in the "quote" below.

"Please note that I always capitalize "Soldiers," "Sailors," and "Airmen." In my book they deserve the same respect that I pay to my beloved Marines."

Colonel Joe "Bull" Fisher

My father, a Marine Captain was recalled to the Marines for the Korean War. He used to tell stories of a man named "Bull" Fisher who served in Korea. He made a huge impression on my Dad, and that was not easy to do. I am currently doing some research on the war and am interested in Fisher in particular. For some time he was stationed at Camp Pendleton following his return from Korea.

Has anyone ever heard of him? I would be grateful to anyone who could share information with me about him.

My father, E. Stephen Stergios died two years ago. An amazing fisherman, he died salmon fishing on the Lochsa River in Idaho. He was wearing his red Marince Corps ball cap that stated that we was a Marine Veteran from both wars. It is placed up high in his study, with the grass and twigs that got caught up in it when he fell are still on the brim. It is one of our favorite possessions and reminders of our Dad. Many Marines of all ages came to my Dad's funeral, many of them wearing some sort of Marine emblems.

I have done some writing on being raised as the daughter of a Marine captain, and its effects on me and my 7 siblings. If anyone is interested, I could share my work. Not all of it is flattering, but it was the truth as I saw it. My Dad did not object, and in fact insisted that I tell the whole story as I knew it. Being the child of a Marine was a defining factor in my life. When I first ran for public office, I chose Marine Corps colors for my campaign because I knew I was in one hell of a fight. Everytime I looked at my yard signs I was reminded of my Dad and the Marines, and just kept on going forward. I won!!!!!! Semper Fi!

Did you know Col Joe "Bull" Fisher

Yes, I knew "The Bull" when he commanded I/3/1stMarDiv on the Hagaru Ri Perimeter as a 1stLt., in Nov/Dec l950, and later in in Viet Nam during 1965/1966 as the commanding officer of 2/4/3dMarDiv. In the latter capacity he commanded his battalion during the first large US offensive of the war during "Operation Starlight." That operation preceded the "Ia Drang Valley" fight by several months regardless of the propaganda to the contrary not withstanding. During the Korean War I was a platoon commander, very briefly a company commander, and finally the S-3 Alfa of 2/5/1stProvMarBrigade, and later 2/5/1stMarDiv. In Viet Nam, "Bull" was on the 3dMarDiv Staff when I returned from battalion command of 1/4/3dMarDiv as the Operations Officer of the Division. What did you want to know about him? tientsin (Sully)

I'll never forget seeing Bull on the network news one night from VietNam getting surgery without anesthesia while he was still on the net directing a fire fight. He had been in a small helo gunship and got wounded while flying low to direct fire, was taken to a field hospital, and didn't let it interrupt his mission.

Recollections of Col. Fisher

No score for this post
February 10 2007, 3:45 PM

Dear Susan,

I served under Col.Fisher during the period just prior to the Vietnam War. Col. Fisher had been assigned in a staff position with FMF PAC at Camp Smith in Hawaii. When the clouds of war started to darken it seemed that many of the good old combat officers from Korea and WWII were sent out to the Division to take over the various posts. Col. Fisher (at that time a Lt.Col.) took command of the 2nd Bn. 4th Marines who were then stationed at MCAS Kanohe Bay, Hawaii as part of the Firt Marine Brigade. It was he who coined their moniker "The Magnificent Bastards".

The first thing he did was erect a tent behind battalion hdqtrs. There he installed weights and other exercise equipment and was seen by the troops working out there every day getting rid of the fat he had accumulated in the cushy staff job. He did the same with us, we threw off the easy garrison attitude and started to amp up the training and PT. I recall one time he had the batalion doing dry net drill (practicing going over the side of a ship and decending via rope nets into the landing craft below) He pulled up in his jeep got out watched for a few minutes then went up the ropes hand over hand swung over the side of the mock ship and right down the ropes on the other side. Referring to the abundent fruit salad of ribbons on his tropical uniform he said. " That's how you get these tickets boys." On other occasions he would have the Brigade Band come up to the battallion area at 0530 and play "wildcat" reveille." He frequently showed up at the messhall and ate breakfast with the troops.

There was a mountain range called the "Pali" which divided the island of Oahu just about down the middle.

On the summit of this range (I'm sure you have seen pictures of it) was a trail from one end to the other. We hiked that trail 28 miles in 13 hours with Col. Fisher. It's the only place I've ever been where the rain went up instead of down. Then we flew into Kona on the big island and hiked from there up to the Army's training area at Pohokuloa, some 26 miles and 8000 feet in elevation. We were starting to harden up for war.

Col. Fisher was the sort of leader who inspired absolute divotion among his men. He had started out in the marines as an enlisted man and won a battlefield commission on Guadalcanal. In Korea he was a company commander who won more medals for personal bravery. I've read referrances to him in several books about the Chosin Reservoir campaign. He had every medal for valor but the medal of honor. He looked like John Wayne, with a craggy, leathered, weatherbeaten face. He was a big man about 6'3" and 230 lb. Of course the troops in that strange way that the marine corps has knew all about his history by the time he had been with us a week or so.

When John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, and Patricia Neal came to Hawaii to film Otto Premingers "In Harms Way" they picked him as their military technical advisor. Of course he took care of his men. We all had frequent stints as extras in the movie and got to meet all the stars, etc., etc.

During that time I reenlisted for another six years in the Corps and it was Colonel Fisher who administered the oath of enlistment to me. I still have the picture from the Hawaiian Marine paper of that event.

Around the time my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and I was given a transfer to Quantico so I could be nearby during her final months. As my plane took off from Hickham Field in Honolulu to return to the mainland I saw with a lump in my throat the ships of the convoy departing Pearl Harbor with the Brigade enroute to Okinawa where they did additional training prior to being committed to Vietnam in 1965.

After that time I followed Col. Fisher's career from afar. I read where he was in command during one of the first large battles the Marines engaged in in Vietnam near the Chu Lai airfield, a major victory I might add. Years later I ran into another marine who had served in 2/4 with the colonel and he told me that Col. Fisher had returned to the states following Vietnam, retired with over 30 years service and shortly after that had contracted cancer and died.

Sure do remember Nellies tit. Climbed it in my greens after some fresh boot as we all were at the time called a troop handler "Sarge" which didn't sit too well with him. When liberty came around the whole damned platoon from Dog Company in greens or utilities was right faced and marched to the base of the tit and then kindly asked to climb to the top. It was great fun. I spent the rest of the night pulling stickers and weeds out of my greens and then repolishing my dress shoes. I can't remember the Sgt's name right now but, it does come across my 68 year old mind now and then. Yet, despite this and other forms of torture I would do it over again. Semper Fi. Rich Bisetti

I just remembered the Sgt's name. It was Sgt. Burke and I saw him coming home on the Walker in October of 1955. Got no chance to talk to him though. Rich Bisetti

Dear Bill I was at Tent Camp#2 Sept 51 with the with turned out to be the 16th Draft for Korea. One night we had gone to a night firing demo., on the way back the CO was standing by the side of the fire break and a bunch of guys were grab assing and he hollered out to knock it off! Some smart ass yelled back ---- you. Nothing was said all the way back to the tent area . When we got there we were kept in ranks, our Plt. Sgt was a S/Sgt that had been in the Raiders and tough as nailes. They called all the Plt sgts in to the Co. Off. aftre about 10 min of assorted shouting by the Capt. all the sgts came out side. Our Plt Sgt said that due to some smart ass we were going to go up old Smokey. It was something that I did not want to do at mid night. I survifed but I will never for get it either, could be your Nellies tit? Joe Stripling Sgt 49/53 54/56 USMCR.

Subject: Korean War Project Closing

===============================================
Korean War Project Newsletter - Oct. 28 2006
Volume 9 # 5
===============================================

This will be the last entry on our newsletter
which has been outgoing
since November of 1998. The newsletter has
reached hundreds of
thousands of veterans, family, students and
governmental workers.

I have good news to report and some sad news. So,
let's get started
with the good news. You know we do not like to
print bad news. It
cannot be avoided today.

===============================================
1. Letters to the Lost - Korea
===============================================

On October 23rd, 2006 Hal announced a program to
have our site
visitors participate in a letter writing campaign
to honor those who
perished during the war in Korea, 1950-1953 and
1953-current.

The letter reading is to take place at the Korean
War Veterans Memorial
on Nov 11th, 2006. Right afterwards a group of
our pen pals, DMZ Vets
from the 68-70 time frame will hold a ceremony to
honor their comrades
and all those who perished before them.

The response from all our visitors has been
fantastic. Many have
requested to attend to read or simply stand and
honor.

===============================================
2. Korean War Project Leaves the Air, possible
Litigation
===============================================

Yes, we are in the process of closing down our
entire operation.

A wakeup call was made on October 5th, 2006 when
Hal and I were
viciously attacked by the President of the KWVA -
The Korean War
Veterans Association, Louis T. (Lou) Dechert, LTC
USA (Ret.).

Mr. Dechert made public accusations that Hal and
I had stolen email or
surface mail contact information from the
Association. He also made it
look like he was not familiar with us in any
fashion.

Actually, all the email addresses were in my
Outlook Address Book from
the KWVA election of 2004 or earlier/later. The
mailing list is public
information on the official website of the KWVA
(kwva.org).

Hal and I were actual contract employees of the
KWVA in July of 2004.
As well, Mr. Dechert and 8 other Board Members
are members of the
Korean War Project.

We have no idea what verbal or private email
assault has been made on
the KWP or individually against Hal and I. Mr.
Dechert has many ROK
governmental ties, many ties to the US Department
of Defense and the
White House as well as KWP members.

We believe the KWVA will sue us through their
staff Counsel,
James (Jimmie) Faircloth, Jr., a nationally known
litigator who was
in the news during the Abramoff - Coushatta Tribe
scandal.
Google him.)

There is simply no way the KWP could afford to
defend a lawsuit even a
totally frivolous one.

Our crime? Sending a simple email and letter
inviting KWVA members to
visit the Korean War Project.

Over the past 11 plus years almost every KWVA
Chapter has had contact
with us via the website. That includes large
numbers of individual
members.

If any of our visitors wants to contact the KWVA
for more information
from the other side, the contact data is:

Louis T. Dechert, President KWVA
163 Deerbrook Trail
Pineville, LA 71360

Email: louisdechert@cox.net

===============================================
3. Korean War Project Leaves the Air, Finances
===============================================

The shock from being slammed also brought Hal and
I to our senses.

The income for the nonprofit continues to slide
due to cost of living
or death of our donor base.

Over the decade we both have made up the
difference in operating
costs by using our credit cards. We now have over
$26,000.00 combined
credit card debt that will not wait to be
reduced.

What?, you say! Yep, maybe not smart on our part
but the desire to make
the site work has been compulsive.

Why didn't you tell us? Those who have chosen to
donate to us did so
within their individual capability. We could not
have asked for more
from those very generous people or groups.

But, out of the 8000 persons (on average) that
visit the website daily,
only one (on average) donates $10.00. Several
million folks visit each
year.

We have had pledge drives but the majority of
folks declined to donate.
Many folks just could not do so. That is all
AOKAY. Our goal was to
provide a service anyone could utilize.

The notice on our Membership page indicates
possibilty of remaining.
Let's qualify that statement. We would love to
continue, fnancial
praticality says otherwise.

It would take a commercial grade donation from an
institution or
presently unknown indivdual to remain online.

Goobye and Good Luck!

Looking for Marines who were in Korea, 1951, Punchbowl, Operations Ripper, Killer, etc.

I am a Marine.
I did not serve in Korea. I served in the 1990s.
But I am also a graduate history student at the University of North Texas majoring in military history.
I am writing my Master's Thesis on U.S. Marine combat in Korea in 1951.
I am looking for Marines or Navy Corpsmen who served there to interview or who know someone who was there I can contact.
I am particularly interested in the drive to the Punchbowl, the Chinese Fifth Phase Offensive, Operations Killer, Ripper, Rugged, and Dauntless.
Please contact me if you are interested in helping. This era of Marine history has for too long remained nearly forgotten. Those battles of 1951 were in many cases every bit as much Marine as Iwo Jima and Bellau Wood. It is time they gain recognition.

My e-mail is: winfield813@yahoo.com

Thank you and
Semper Fi!!!
