Only one embryo made it to blast?

Hi all - just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.....We are scheduled for a day 5 transfer later this morning. As of day 3, we were told we had 5 thriving embryos that all looked fantastic (from the 8 eggs that we received). I just got a call from my doctor a few minutes ago saying that the development of all of one of the embryos had slowed down between yesterday and this morning, and they are "not looking good".
However, he said that based on the quality of the one thriving embryo, that he would have recommended only transferring one anyway - but - I'm completely perplexed? How does it make any sense that when using my OE, at age 36 through 38, we always had at least 5 or 6 thriving highly rated embryos on day 5 and always had some left to freeze....and with a donor who is 23 we end up with just one? This doesn't make any sense to me? I asked our doctor about it and he didn't really have an answer - just said that we should remain optimistic about this cycle, plenty of women are successful when transferring one high quality embryo, blah blah blah. Has anyone experienced this? Thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!
