in addition to the triplet and quad stories resulting from 3-embryo transfers, there have also (quietly) been a lot of selective reductions done for DE patients. Many times they reduce 3 to 1. Yes it is heartbreaking and many people say they could never reduce, but that changes when the reality of the situation hits and docs are advising otherwise.
Most clinics in the US have really put an end to transferring more than 2 embryos (3 day or 5 day) if the donor is younger than 35 (per SART recommendations, they have a paper called "Guidelines For How Many to Transfer" or something like it), unless there are very compelling reasons. The industry has gotten much more strict on numbers since octomom brought so much publicity to a mostly unregulated industry. |
