The Happy Book and Movie List

OK, Minniet in a thread below said that she read only happy books and movies while she was ttc, but what are those books? It's not easy. I'm going to start and others can make their suggestions:

Books

-Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Chronicles (first in series is The Last Kingdom). OK, there is plenty not happy in this series about a young boy who is abducted and raised by Vikings in the time of Alfred the Great and reluctantly becomes a warrior in that king's service, but the fast-paced adventure will keep you from pondering any of it for long. While there is some mention of childbirth and children, women are mostly in the background, and Cornwell's unsparing depiction of the lot of women in the Dark Ages will have you saying a little prayer of thanks that you live now and not then.

Movies

-Dean Spanley. Hilarious, poignant film about a man who in the course of visiting with his difficult, aging father becomes acquainted with a clergyman in touch with a rather unusual past life. Peter O'Toole was nominated for or won several awards for his performance.

-Spirited Away. Even if you think you don't like anime, don't pass over Miyazaki's masterpiece about a little girl lost in a magical realm.

-Bottle Shock. Pleasant, though a bit formulaic, true story of a connoisseur who tries to stake out new territory in the wine business in the 1970's by staging a competition between French and Californian wines.

-The Invention of Lying. Ricky Gervais as the first man to discover deception in a world where everyone is literally truthful all the time. Some reference to childbearing, but unlikely to disturb infertile sensibilities.

-Dodge Ball. Utterly puerile comedy about the owner of an egalitarian gym named "Average Joe's" who comes into conflict with the egotistical owner of a large fitness chain. Think I once watched the YouTube clip of the Columbia educational-style film starring Hank Azaria as the young "Patches O'Houlihan" about six times in one day.

-Kind Hearts and Coronets. Classic Ealing comedy with Alec Guiness playing all eight of the distant relatives a poor young man must murder to become the Duke D'Ascoyne.

Everyone else?

I'm not much of a reader, but Bridget Jones' Diary, The Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood and Postcards from the Edge are 3 of the standouts that I remember making me smile. As for movies, Albert Brook's "Lost in America" makes me laugh so hard even after seeing it many, many times. Also "The Graduate", "Spinal Tap" and "Broadcast News". "The Sound of Music" always makes me smile. Gosh, sad that there aren't any recent books or movies that spring to mind! I like both of the "Sex and The City" movies too as a guilty pleasure. Although baby stuff comes up in those. Curious to see what other suggest. happy.gif

For books, I really enjoyed reading high quality literature for teens, things like the Golden Compass series, The Girl with the Golden Egg, I will have to go back and find other titles. My husband is in education, so that was easy to get titles for.

I also love: Mennonite in a Black Dress (this was read while sitting next to my Mom as we escaped her abusive husband and moved her west, and yes...it had me laughing aloud in the aisle.

he silly Twilight books which reminded me of what it felt like to be a horny teen instead of an old lady ttc to every month...happy.gif

I am reading Tina Fey's Bossy Pants and I laugh out loud every page.

Dalai Lama's books.

Movies: anything by Nora Ephron (It's Complicated, etc.), all the Sex and The City movies, no matter how bad they are, Mean Girls, Old School, Mel Brooks, anything with Gene Wilder in it...True Blood Series on HBO.

Oprah mag. Gourmet Mag. Go to Farmer's Markets and make a new vege dish with cheese on it.

Absolutely no fashion mags which are self esteem eroding!

I Love You to Death, maybe my favorite comedy of the 1980's. Tracy Ullman stars in this story based on a real-life incident of a wife who tries to kill her philandering husband, Kevin Kline, and fails miserably. Keanu Reeves and William Hurt have stand-out cameos as Harlan and Marlin, the drug-addled would-be hitmen she hires to assist her.
