I think when people think of the word "surrogate" they think of traditional surrogates where the carrier's own eggs are used so she is giving birth to her genetic baby for another couple/woman/man. Gestational carriers are carrying a child without none of their own DNA.

Isn't it legally incredibly risky? I don't think any state (once again, correct if wrong), even CA, supports taking a woman's genetic child away from her. Maggie (in VA)

Maggie- There are a lot of states that recognize this arrangement and getting a birth certificate is not difficult.

OP gestational surrogate or carrier it's all the same thing, they're all surrogates. The poster on that board was just being overly nitpicky.

Agree with PP. I asked this question of agencies I am looking at, and that is exactly what they told me.

Both terms are used to indicate a woman who is carrying an embryo for someone else. The clinics prefer the word "carrier" to surrogate. I prefer the word "surrogate" to carrier. (I needed a surrogate to get my twins).

A "traditional surrogate" or "traditional carrier" is someone who uses her own eggs and the intended father's or donor (sperm bank's) sperm.

A "gestational surrogate" or "gestational carrier" is someone who uses someone else's eggs or donor eggs and the intended father's or donor (sperm bank's) sperm..

State laws are very variable. You should look them up  orconsult a lawyer before choosing a surrogate or carrier.

In CA you can get a PBO (pre-birth order) using either a traditional or gestational surrogate and your name will be put on the birth certificate at birth.

You will see people refer to the person as their "surro" and there is a website you've likely seen called surromoms dot com, full of gestational carriers or gestational surrogates.
