I would like to know how to extend the life of my garage door springs. I have replaced them twice already. I am also considering doing the replacement myself, but I hear it can be dangerous. Any suggestions?
Springs are rated in inch pounds per turn (ippt) and springs are generally rated for 10,000 cycles.
ex. a 16 x 7 non-insulated door requires 2-.207 guage wire, x 2" ID (inside diameter) x 22" long.. .207 x 2" x 22". Each spring has an (ippt) of 23.5 for a total of 47. These springs will be rated for 10,000 cycles. average life span 7 - 10 yrs.
To increase you life expectancy you will have to increase your wire guage and spring legnth. To double your life expectancy you may install 2 -
.234 guage wire, x 2" ID, x 39" long. .234 x 2" x 39".
Hope this explains the process of extending your spring life.
