There was girl's school campout (Harvard Westlake School) taking place in the valley below the house on the night of the murders. Several of the girls at the campout actually heard the cries and gunshots from the mayhem. The supervisors of the school looked around but didn't notice anything. They wouldn't because they were several thousand yards below the Polanski house. The sounds would travel for miles through those canyons.
