The Gladdy is on the way to go, all is assembled except upper wing and wheels, a coat of primer showed some spots to be fixed, which I'll do tonight.
But...here is the problem.
I was sure that the plane should have been painted in standard FAA scheme of EDSG/DSG upper surfaces, lighter shades on the lower wing to compensate shadows, sky grey sides.
Airfix instructions have a strange color callout instead:

1) black/white undersides. Is this correct for a former FAA plane? Is the b/w on the lower surface of the upper wing also? Is the demarcation between b/w and sides grey sharp or feathered?

2) for the upper surfaces, Airfix calls Dark Earth instead of one of the greys: was this a field application of a brownish color to better conceal the aircraft while on Malta ground? Is this correct?

Airfix crew, come to rescue...save me asking this the Gurus on Plane Talking...

There was some discussion on the ATF about this,

The Malta Gladiators were discussed in this thread on the Airfix Tribute Forum, including the colours.

http://airfixtributeforum.myfastforum.org/about12475.html

Hope there might be something there to help. I did my Gladiator with solid demarcation below the line of the exhaust for the underside blak/white, and Hu166 for the underside of the top wing.

I actually find it hard to believe that the top wing and fuselage uppers are those colours

July 1 2009, 2:24 AM

what is the reference for that. Sea Gladiators would have had standard FAA camo, and as most of the operations would have been over water around Malta why was the EDSG changed to DE?

Very odd, as I said I need a great deal of convincing about that including some irrefutable written sources.

MASSIMO - YOU WILL LOVE THIS

I think

Maybe not good reference - but 1000% FUN to watch

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLIxeE_AIn8

It's all part of a 3D animation movie, made with Il-2 flight sim :

Part I :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lx7AMvof6Z8&feature=related

Try to watch the other parts too - it's all together a movie, well made and documented, a lot of effort went into it, and I like the little "artistic freedoms" such as the Italian Il-4s... probably because no BR-20s in Il-2 flight sim, and the BR-20 and Il-4 kinda look similar... from far away anyway... maybe a good occasion to build an Italian Il-4 bomber, as per this Il-2 flight sim 3D animation movie ?
It surely will make people scratch their head happy.gif

Heck, part II is where the actions starts :

I just love these Il-4s !!!

LOL...well done indeed, but somehow funny...

July 2 2009, 3:39 AM

...I would not believe that a Russian front C200 (yellow fuselage band and yellow lower wingtips)was shot down by a Malta Gladiator, altough fitted with long-range additional fuel tanks...and those fake BR20s...they look nowhere like a BR20, at least for the fact that BR20s had double tail rudder...The video is very cool anyways.
I found this same video on his own sitehttp://www.wingmenproductions.com/content/movie.html , but it didn't work. Thanks for posting an youtube alternative...

HyperScale's Group Build Guidelines

The objective of this Group Build is to encourage as many modellers as possible to build their kits and share their progress via words and photos on this Forum.

You are welcome to post general construction tips or relevant reference information and photos to this Forum too.

This Group Build will feature Airfix kits.

  1. Build as many kits as you like

  2. Conversions, aftermarket and scratchbuilding are all permitted.

  3. Any markings are acceptable.

  4. Document your progress and do a write-up on your build - where did you have trouble, what improvements did you make, what markings did you choose and why? It would be GREAT if everyone would do a writeup and submit it to HyperScale as a Feature Article.
