After reading Chris's post regarding the QL,there is very little I can add.Although I didn't realise the moldings were so old.
Anyway preamble over on to the pics

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

The instructions,in classic Airfix fashion
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

And the Sprue
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

and the decal sheet
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

As you can see the components a surprisingly free of flash (for a molding that has been in use continuously) and has a fair degree of detail.I'm beginning to look forward to starting this build, but need to do some more trawling on google first.....

So there you have it.

Take care and happy 4th to all the Yanks reading this
Woz

Hi Woz.

July 3 2009, 8:03 PM

The Airfix Matador refueler is indeed a very nice kit; even if it was a brand-new release. It goes together very well and certainly look the part. Enjoy your build, as I certainly enjoyed building it last year. Some pictures shows the result OOB.

Try 'aec model O854' when 'Googling', as technically the 6x6 wasn't a Matador, though...

...unofficially it was often called that (apologies if you knew that already, just trying to help).

One feature of the 'Matadors' (4x4 and 6x6), is that the mudguards were really only...

...bent strips of steel, with some nominal stiffening ribbing rolled into them at the edges (war austerity production).

The 'fancy' curved edged ones you tend to see on restored vehicles, would have been post war production or replacements. So the thick plastic ones on the Airfix kit (easier to injection mould), parts 65 + 94 and 95, are not really correct, they either need thinning down or replacing with plastic or metal strip (if you think its worth the effort).

The only other part I'd query, is part 120, the 'firewall' partition between the back of the cab and the main tank. Not sure that all 6x6's had this fitted ('check your references' as they say), but some do seem to have something in this position at least from the chassis downwards, behind the front wheels (maybe the upper part was removed/removable or an option/not fitted. Again, not sure it's that important, but I thought I'd mention it.

BTW, I have this kit (well two of them, and a Recovery Set and half a dozen of the 4x4 Matador artillery tractors). No longer my scale (now 1:48), I actually got them for a crazy notion I had, to model the vehicle fleet of a firm of concrete engineers my dad worked for in the 1950's. All their main vehicles were ex-military (as was the case for many firms starting-up after the war), which also included a CMP truck and for mobile crane work; a Ruston Bucyrus tracked excavator and a Thornycroft 'Amazon'. Time and interests move on though (but I just can't bring myself to dispose of the kits just yet!).

HTH

Regards
Steve

HyperScale's Group Build Guidelines

The objective of this Group Build is to encourage as many modellers as possible to build their kits and share their progress via words and photos on this Forum.

You are welcome to post general construction tips or relevant reference information and photos to this Forum too.

This Group Build will feature Airfix kits.

  1. Build as many kits as you like

  2. Conversions, aftermarket and scratchbuilding are all permitted.

  3. Any markings are acceptable.

  4. Document your progress and do a write-up on your build - where did you have trouble, what improvements did you make, what markings did you choose and why? It would be GREAT if everyone would do a writeup and submit it to HyperScale as a Feature Article.
