Living in Interesting Times
by Col. Bob Pappas, USMC, Ret.
John McCain is no conservative! It does not matter that he attempts to paint
himself as one. His Senate record and his marked disdain for conservatives,
shows him for what he is despite his attempt to morph into one at the recent
CPAC convention. Reagan conservative? That is an insult to the President.
(Someone asked whether as President, he would sign an Immigration bill that
gave "amnesty" to illegal immigrants. He repeatedly dodged the question
with a weak-minded response that "the American people have spoken.")
President Bush has declared McCain to be a conservative, so we should all be
good little girls and boys and go to sleep. If the President was qualified
to make that pronouncement, that would be one thing. But the President is
no more a conservative than I am a rabid liberal as most of the loony left
presently is. Whereas one can support the President in the War on Terror,
make no mistake he too is no conservative. He is beset by a long list of
liberal actions in which Democrats should take great pride. It continues to
amaze me that they hate him so; but apparently they must demonize him
notwithstanding his socially liberal bias in order to have some basis for
their own political agenda.
One may ask why has the Democrat Party has moved so far into socialist
"lala" land? The answer is simple, because their chief political opponent
moved deep into their territory, and in order to distinguish themselves they
have moved further to the left. They certainly haven't moved to the right.
Reflect for a moment on the 2000 campaign. Bush moved his political cart so
far to the left that Bill Clinton stated he was attempting to pre-empt the
Democrat agenda; and, despite that conservatives supported him. In 2004,
the President campaigned on the War on Terror in which he was supported by
General Franks and Senator Zell Miller of Georgia. Conservatives again
supported the President.
There is an appropriate saying that fits the present situation: "Fool me
once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me." But for the President to
try to "fool" us a third time is beyond the pale, it is laughable. It
reminds me of his statement about Ken Lay, criminal CEO of Enron, "Yes, he's
a good guy." Mr. President, a "good guy" would not do to Enron shareholders
what Ken Lay did.
Realistically, the President took advantage of conservatives so that he
could win in the hope that he could do the impossible at the Federal level,
that is, to get along with Democrats. Their objective is permanent
political power, to institute a single party system. The President went a
long way toward giving it to them while mistakenly thinking that he could do
a "Texas" and get away with it. He failed in that effort and now Democrats
would flush him without blinking.
One observer stated, "There are three parties, Democrat, Republican and
McCain-Lieberman." The Senator's wife has made it known that McCain takes
pleasure is his role as maverick. Well enjoy it Senator because
conservatives are wise to him and he's toast. We may be loyal, but we are
not stupid.
Someone recently said, there are six good reasons for conservatives to
support McCain, and they all sit on the Supreme Court. Nice try. What makes
that lamebrain think that "Mr. Maverick McCain" would nominate conservative
judges? Get serious! "Maverick" has shown his true political colors on too
many occasions, and they are not conservative. Whereas there is no problem
"reaching across the political isle" it is quite another to move there.
In a recent comment, the Senator stated that he assumed that he would be the
Republican Party's nominee. If one learns one thing in life, and most
certainly as a military officer he should have, it is "never assume." There
is well worn "saw" about assuming, "too assume makes an ass, out of "u" and
me." So it is, Senator McCain has assumed and is about to find out that he
assumed too much.
As it now stands McCain does not have the delegates to clinch the
nomination, and he won't; Romney supporters won't vote for him and neither
will Huckabee's. The Romney and Huckabee factors will be his undoing, why
else did Romney "suspend" his campaign; and, why else has Huckabee stayed
the course when all odds were that he would "die" along the way?
There is no clear winner on either side of the political isle at the moment
and likely will not be until the respective Conventions. A Chinese proverb
states, "May you live in interesting times." And, that is what the
Conventions portend to be, "interesting times." If Democrats are smart they
will dump the Clintons and ride the Obama wave. And if Republicans are smart
they will eschew McCain and pick someone who can unite the Party.
As it is, Hillary's campaign is turning out to be nothing more than a
referendum on feminism.
Given that is true, which it appears to be, and given the negative numbers
Clinton now "boasts," just wait until her "feminism" becomes the issue. No
self-respecting male would touch that one with a ten-foot pole. But, on the
other hand, there are a lot of less-than-self-respecting males in both major
parties, so it may prove to be a plus for the Clintons. But maybe there is
still a tinge of maleness in the Democrat Party---one can always hope.
Bill Clinton recently stated that he understands the "immense pride that has
propelled black voters to the polls to support Obama," but that his (white)
wife would make a better president. Clinton has become a joke, and just
doesn't get it. He has had blacks around his little finger for so long that
he believes he can spout his racism and get away with it. It is heartening
to note that former Governor Wilder of Virginia can see through them and
hopefully others will too. He stated, "Barack Obama is not a fairy tale, he
is real." To be frank, Obama's politics are too far left for me, but I like
him at the "made for TV" level.
Finally, there is only one conservative who can unite the Republican Party,
and he is not running. There have been many occasions that God directly
intervened in the affairs of mankind; for conservatives, it's time to pray
for intervention.
