So what do you think about those membership storesyou know the ones where you pay an annual  fee for membership and you get to buy there at much lower prices from a large selection of merchandise.

I have been a member of several of them the last few years, and, generally, it is a great thing.

One well known store in particular (probably the largest of all) is not located in my home town and so I drive to one  many miles from here every month or so to stock up on needed itemsthey have everything from AZ food, furniture, automotive, etc. And the savings are great; and I spend several hundred dollars there per trip. The employees are all very helpful and courteous all the time.

Just one thing really bothers me to the point that I no longer shop there as often lately, and I may just stop altogether soon.

Once through the line at the cashier, you push your shopping carts directly to the exit where an employee is stationed to search your cartmerchandise that is already yours, bought and paid for, btw.

I personally bitterly resent them going through my belongings, especially the food items, and they are not required to wear gloves either.

Why is it necessary for them to do this at all?

It cannot be that they suspect anyone  of shoplifting as once through the cashier you are isolated from the rest of the store,  and must go directly to the exit. In fact if the checker/searcher is questioned on this, they simply point to a sign that indicates that this is for the purpose of making sure the customer has all the items he has on his sales receipt. Come on now, give me a break, I dont buy this at allsounds fishy to me.

I particularly dislike them pawing through my food in the freezer bags, (I have already mentioned that they dont wear gloves) and when I balk at this, they usually become defensive, and some eventually even nasty. I blame management for putting these employees in a position where irate customers may then end up in a confrontation with them on a policy that is poor public relations on the part of management to begin with.

Lately, each and every time this occurs, I am sure to call the store manager and voice my displeasure. Further, I now also call their corporate headquarters and let them too know I am most unhappy with their ridiculous procedure. It seems to me that they are allowing this to undermine a good thing for both customers and themselves. Why?

Americans are pretty passive folks and tend  to just go along with anything. Notwithstanding that my membership very likely contains my hastily signed consent to the search, I think this whole thing is a farce for whatever reason they continue to do this.

Im sure there are many more members out there who experience this and just go along with the program even though they feel as I do.

I suggest that you start voicing your concerns not only to store managers, but to district and corporate headquarters as well. Call them on the spot, e-mail, snail-mail, etc. Tell your relatives and friends to do likewise. Bring pressure to bear on themits the only way things will change.
