This way is (in my opinion) downright nasty, and doesn't encourage multithreaded offshoots on a topic. I find it just plain confusing if you try to respond to a message that wasn't the last one posted in the thread, and it means I have to remember about what order and how many posts were in a thread to know if I need to check it again (as opposed to just looking for red links with the old mode), and in addition to all the other boards I read configured like this, that gets annoying.
