::WARNING: This is the post where I spit bile. Please watch your step::
Why the hell are heroes so freaking stupid? I'm surprised they survive at all--
I can think of a few actions that bug the hell out of me.
1. Listening to anonymous hooded 'helpful' strangers. God, it would be so easy to take out a whole party just by abusing this..
'NO no No... you have to hold both wires at once in order to save the world... Now close your eyes and think and I'll go flip this nifty little switch.'
2. Wearing the wrong clothes. How many times have you seen the token female character [usually in standard jailbait outfit] on a snowy mountaintop-- in the same barely-there clothes? OR, conversely, heroes is armor wandering the desert...
ergot: what the hell is he doing out here, anyway?
gel: Probably on a quest to save the world, or whatnot.
ergot: Oh? What makes you say that?
gel: Why else would a brainless idiot be wandering about the desert in a full suit of armor?
ergot: Good point, Sir! Can I kill him now?
gel: knock yerself out, kiddo..
3. The biggest idiot is almost always the leader/alpha role, or at least accounts for most of the plot. This is taking the 'everyman' role waaaaay too far if you ask me. What really pisses me off is that, no matter how stupid and F'd up they are, THEY CAN DO NO WRONG IN THE EYES OF FATE. Sure, they screw up-- Sure, the whole world/entire bit-part cast usually ends up suffering for it-- but, if you notice, the moron always manages to pull his rear out of the fire, beat the clock, whatever. WHAT ARE THE ODDS?! The idiot child of destiny has once more saved everything!! WOOH-freaking-HOO!!
I need to rest now. Anybody else have any grdges against the heroes?
I haven't gotten very far yet, simply because it was a rental.
But, looking at some of the guides, I'd have to disagree, based on what information I can find.
Serge is originally brought into the whole plotline because of a situation he had no control over. To keep in this line of thought:
Serge is a pawn in a situation created without his help, as such, his only hope of making things 'normal' again is to bring about a resolution of plot and hope he survives.
Therefore, if Serge is a pawn, and is only following one of many paths that will bring about some sort of ending, we cannot judge him as we would under normal circumstances. What we can be pretty sure of is that:
Serge seems to be the only character who can tip the scales, so to speak.
Serge himself had no control over his involvement.
Fate [the big you-know-what]brought this about without any thought to Serge's opinion, much less his permission.
If played properly, Serge can fix everything...eventually.
Serge is human, and as such, a certain amount of error can be expected of him.
I have yet to see Serge do anything really retarded.
Kid should be shot if she says another word in that annoying 'accent' of hers.
Pip is proof that even PokeMon are looking for other work.
You are wrong.
By analyzing all of these 'factors', I have come to this conclusion:
Fate [my little euphemism for you-know-who-and-what] started this new chain of event by interacting with Serge in what was--at the time-- seemingly a helpful gesture, but, in reality, brings him much trouble, worry, and headache for the majority of the game.
So, FATE did SERGE wrong, and anything Serge chooses to do that furthers the plot should be viewed as a service.
CAUSE: Fate monkeying around while off-duty.
EFFECT: Screwing Serge over but good.
JUDGEMENT: [long, intense, drawn out sound of someone's head being repeatedly banged against the desk] I'm not very good at this part.
The Problem Here Is That Some Could Say That Serge Was The One Who Originally Caused Problems. Fate Was Using Serge Because Serge Gained The Attention Of A Certain Item, Also Mucking Things Up. But, If We Really Want To Find The Main Point Of Blame, Then The One Who Deserves The Most Blame For The Incidents Were None Other Then Chrono And Co. It Was Chrono And The Gang Who Changed The Time Stream, Variably Mucking Things Up An A Grand Scale. Not That they Can Be Blamed, Because They Wanted To Fix The Problem Caused By Lavos Destroying The World. But Because Of This, Time Was Royally Screwed, Causing Even Worse Problems Down The Road. So, To Answer The Question During The Opening Of Chrono Cross.... "When Did The Cogs Of Fate Begin To Turn?" When Marle Was Accidently Transported Back In Time By Lucca's Machine. THAT Was When Everything Began.
Serge managed to get to the frozen flame and be healed because the supercomputer FATE crashed momentarily. Wazuki's (Serge's dad)was morphed into Lynx, the tool of FATE, to try to eliminate Serge (the one thing that could destroy FATE). As you can see, FATE was not too happy with Serge (and especially unhappy after being destroyed by him), and it was not FATE's doing that Serge became what he did (I suppose one could argue that the bug put in by Lucca that caused FATE to shutdown momentarily was an integral part of FATE itself, but it was designed to work against the machine instead of help its goals).

Alright.... let's put the euphemisms aside and see if we are speaking the same language. Now, as noted before, I am not very far into the game [most recently, I beat the crap out of the dwarven-tank and a small red dragonet], but this is what I have gathered so far, thoiug it may be wrong:
During the temporary shutdown of the huge computer-contrlling-time-or whatever, a part of the computer, a glitch or bug or Schala or whatever [it varies according to who you ask {IN RL, SILLY}] healed a sick little boy named Serge, and screwed things up, among other things, turning Wazuki into a large angry cat-person-slave. I still have to figure out the logic behind this move, but who cares..it's a game and I haven't even finished it... Anyway, Wazuki has something to do with the Frozen Flame, he's either looking for it or using it as bait for Serge and Kid, particularly Serge since he was one of the main factors in the most recent screwup.
So for the length of the game, Serge is simply trying to survive long enough to find out what the hell is goig on, and then fix it. I realize that Kid has some connection with Schala, and the clowngirl [forgot name] has some connection with the computer, as do the dragons.
This is all I know, keeping this in mind, let's continue; if I'm wrong, please tell me. Now, if we want to stay withing the confines of the CC world, the whole thing starts when Serge is healed. If instead, we want to be really anal, we could say that, in fact, Lucca is to blame for creating the teleporter pads. Or we could be just plain stupid and blame the squaresoft game designers and writers. Or their Mothers. Whatever.
I'd suppose the blame rests on whoever you decide, since there are so many differnt levels of this concept.
Anyway, the whole thing was started by an overgenralization on my part. 'HE WHO CAN DO NO WRONG IN THE EYES OF FATE.' was little more than the hyperbole of a really pissed-off gamer. I should have said 'HE WHO CAN SCREW UP NO END AND STILL SAVE THE DAY, PROBABLY BECAUSE FATE OR GOD OR THE GAME DESIGNERS ARE ON HIS SIDE.'
Very sorry all. I should have been more mature than to pounce on a misunderstanding and make a point of answering it in a silly way.
QUESTION: you [joe or something] said that Serge reached the forzen flame due to the power-outage. Reached, as in physically reached? Serge was there too?
'HE WHO CAN DO NO WRONG IN THE EYES OF FATE.' should probably have been written as:
'HE WHO CAN SCREW UP NO END AND STILL SAVE THE DAY, PROBABLY BECAUSE FATE OR GOD OR THE GAME DESIGNERS ARE ON HIS SIDE.'
I am quite sorry for any misunderstanding and/or hard feelings that have cropped up due to my earlier post.
As a note: I am still quite interested in any pet peeves you may have concerning hero-behavior.
Lynx (and therefore Wazuki) is a 'terminal interface' for F.A.T.E., Chronopolis's time monitor (and El Nido controlling) computer. However, "Fate" was locked out of Chronopolis when Serge contacted the flame- the security system only recognised Serge as an "Arbiter of Time" - the "Chrono Trigger" - this is why Lynx takes Serge's body, in order for Lynx to get back into Chronopolis and fix what got screwed up in that power outage.
Am I the only one that sees the "FATE" Thing to be very remnisicent of Xenogears? I mean, they even use the term "Terminal Interface" (in Xeno: "Terminal interface for God") and the Records of Fate-Save Cube similarties are haunting.
First, yes Serge was physically at the Frozen Flame during the outage. You see, somehow during the storm the actual >gate< To chronopolis was left wide open... Wazkui, Miguel and Serge (now nealry dead due to the poison) ended up in Chronopolis due to getting lost in the VERY SAME storm.
This I beleive is what caused the Time Crash, since in all this happened in "Home" and when a certian event happened it caused Fate to lose control over the Home dimension- notice how Chronopolis ITSELF is no longer in that very same dimension.
MAJOR SPOILER, I MEAN REALLY REALLY MAJOR.

And everything- the entire ordeal, the time crash, dinopolis, chronopolis, the time split, el nido, etc, was all designed to lead up to the moment where Schala is finally released. Who caused it? Schala herself. Yes, CC is entirely from beginning to end, to 2400 ad from 10,000 years prior, the 'sidequest' to save Schala.

Just as I was asking myself who in the world would WANT to win this game (the story caused me MAJOR apathy) I realized that this is what I was demanding from the time I finished Chrono Trigger!! The rescue of our dear Schala!!!
Now, if only it made a LITTLE more sense why Lavos would "protect" itself by making the whole thing easier on this bunch of heroes . . .
--Darylohki, who is SOOOO happy to get a clear explaination!!

Remember, from 12,000 onward (That includes the '8000 bc' or near time that Chronopolis was dropped to) Schala is literally 'part' of Lavos. They said that Lavos pulled Chronopolis back in time... but couldn't it be the Schala part?
Dinopolis, by the way, does have a symbiotic relationship with the planet, btu also with lavos - i beleive it's mentioned that the Dragon God is connected to the 'dimension splinter' Frozen Flame, and the Dragon God forms the "Time Devourer" - a projection of Lavos into the 'standard' dimensions.
Perhaps Schala pulled Chronopolis back, and Lavos thinking to stop Schala, brought back DInopolis to stop him, little knowing this was also part of Schala's plan.
