1948 Leaf vs. 1949 Leaf?

Does anyone know if its common that the 1948 Leaf set seems to be in higher contrast and brighter than the 1949 Leaf set,
which seems more saturated, when comparing the same player image from each set?

My guess is the cardboard...48's are printed on glossier surface while 49's are printed on plain cardboard.

1948 Leaf vs 1949

March 30 2009, 9:10 PM

The brighter looking 1948's are due to the White cardboard that Leaf printed them on.
The 1949 set was printed on Gray cardboard.

Leaf printed their 1948 Boxing set on both White and Gray cardboard, and there is a
significant improvement in the quality of the cards printed on the White cardboard.

The 48 leaf football high numbers were also printed with both cream and grey backs. You really can see the difference.
