We, however, are not the average man asking "How much do you lift?". We are powerlifters and the goal in a powerlifting competition is to achieve the best total. No man at the 2008 IPF men's worlds benched more than his squat or deadlift and won; all of the winning bench numbers were significantly lower than the squats and deadlifts. The muscles used in the squat and deadlift are simply bigger and stronger than those used for bench press, so they add more to your total and, in doing so, contribute more to the goal of winning the powerlifting meet.

Squat and deadlift add more to your total thereby increasing your chances of winning the meet and that makes them more important than bench press.
