You know we're circling the drain when our government gives more respect to a child molester than our soldiers that give their lives for this country.

OK, I agree. There should be moments of silence for our fallen soldiers. There should have been acknowledgement of their sacrifice from the very start of the stupid Iraq war. But there was NONE. There should have been accolades given to every single one of our soldiers that came home maimed and broken forever. There should have been the best of medical and psychological care available to them.

Little late for that now, Sparky.

I wonder why no moments of silence for Farah Fawcett? I wonder if there will be a moment of silence for Karl Malden now? How about Harve Presnell? Fred Travalina?

It just gets bizzarer and bizzarer....they have a moment of silence for MJ who is talented yes, but hinky at best...and then instead of simply standing by quietly, the guy has to make a spectacle of himself by walking out.  Lawmakers are running amok with absolutely whaclo behavior.  They have children with mistresses, they sneak off to other countries, they sell senate seats to the highest bidders, they hit on adolescent aides, they proposition gay sex in public restrooms, they throw cell phones, they acost law enforcement officers, they hide money in the freezer....

We are responsible.  We have let this happen.

Yes we have let it happen because we couldn't stop it. That indicates that the society is as corrupt as the government.`

How stupid...giving a moment of silence to such a doofus. I would have walked out too. I'm with Moniker on this one. Let's have our Congress do a moment of silence monthly, or weekly, or daily for the lives of our troops.

I am sick and tired of all the Jackson shit.  'Nuff already.  I probably would have walked out myself.  Butcha know, when bush was in, we never even saw the dead solidiers coming home in their flag draoped coffins.  So much for neocon respect for the troops.  But, I'm sorry, stop the Jackson crap, I'm sick to death of it.

There is a moment of silence for our troops on the first legislative day of each month in the House, which started June, 2008:

House to observe moment of silence

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) honored the request of a North Carolina Republican this week by calling for a moment of silence on the first legislative day of each month to commemorate military personnel who have been killed or injured in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The speaker sent Rep. Walter Jones a letter on Thursday notifying him that the House will now stand in silence at the beginning of each month starting in June, when members return from the week-long Memorial Day recess. "Your idea is an excellent one and I plan to honor it when Congress returns," Pelosi wrote.

Jones, who supported the initial invasion of Iraq, has become a frequent critic of the war as well as President Bush for his handling of the conflict. The North Carolina Republican has voted for a series of withdrawal measures since Democrats took power and recently trounced a primary opponent who challenged that anti-war stance.

I am grateful that Speaker Pelosi agrees that it is important for the House of Representatives to honor Americas service members who have been killed or wounded, Jones said in a joint statement. This moment of silence will serve as a solemn thank you from a grateful nation.

So, in the youtube vid, Yarmuth states he was not alone in walking out, same sentiments by others...they escaped to the cloakroom.  Any idea how many others walked out, too?

I agree... enough already!

in my lifetime... I have experienced the deaths of four Icons that generated that kind of response:

John Lennon

Elvis

Selena

and now Michael Jackson.

Of the four, I think Lennon and Elvis had the greatest affects of the American music scene, and on life in the world.

Elvis helped solidify Rock and Roll as an entertainment form

Lennon helped to change the way we looked at the War in Vietnam... and helped bring about the "Summer of Love" and the youth movement worldwide.

Selena was the first HIspanic international superstar... (You think the Jackson outpouring is big... you should have lived in Texas when she died to see grief, and trauma.

And now Wacko Jacko... who according to the News sources in England, has inspired multiple fan suicides.

GIVE ME A BREAK! Enough already.

John Stewart had  a clip of the most stupid reporter covering the Jackson story. These fans are all waiting outside the Jackson home because "Michael Jackson will only  die once"

I think it is appropriate to be respectful of Michael's memory as an entertainer, but it should not have come to a moment of silence in Congress.  I agree with the lawmakers who walked out.

Carl Malden and Fred Travelina died yesterday and all we saw was a crawl on the news.  And, as far as Lennon being a more important icon, that is a definite fact.  I always thought Jackson was "fluff" while Lennon was "substance".
