I may not have the technical words to describe this, but: When I highlight something, do a right click and click on "copy", that information is copied to the clipboard, but I never see anything called "clipboard". However, I can then go to notepad or word or some other text editor, open a new file, and then click on paste and that information I just copied will be pasted to that document. You can then edit it, save, etc. as a text file.

I think you're right, Gus. Now that you mention it, I believe that years ago you could actually see a program called clipboard. Now it just keeps what you copy to it somewhere deep down in the mysterious bowels of the computer, until you tell it where to paste.
