So far over $2,000,000. as in millions? why should the city foot the bill? Let the Jackson clan pay for it. They will be the ones to profit from his death.

I agree, I just heard on TV that it is hoped the family will contribute. They should not have been able to book the Staples center until they paid for it and paid for security.
Oh, please, CA has been cashing in on celebrities and their lives/deaths for years. It contributes to your economy. Well, what's left the CA economy, anyway.
And, MJ certainly paid his share of taxes while living in CA! MORE than enough to cover a measley $2M funeral cost. Suck it up!
If things get too out of control, CA could just set up a website for donations like your freaky Octomom. I'd send money to cover MJ's funeral costs, as I'm sure many others would. The problem might be ensuring the money actually gets to the right account since your state is in such dire straits. And, to think the Obama admin wants to bring mismanagement and whacko spending, CA style, to the rest of country. Keep it, we don't want it! You can't even bury your dead without being in the red.
"My gawd, inka....relax, have some fun, you sound like a bitter old crone!!"
Now you can add B.O.C.T. to your list of degrees, Inka! LOL

I think the Jackson's should foot the bill. what other celebrities did the people of Ca. pay for? Why does his funeral have to be such a big Stage production. Send your bucks if you want Inka. I live here and I don't want him getting any of mine.
I would think the Gov. of Ca. would step in here and put a stop to it. Oh wait!! Wrnold is a Republican. They know how to spend, and then blame the dems for it.
Where is Grey Davis now that we need him?

California is incurring a lot of cost due to police and security, but their businesses also cash in due to all of the visitors the memorial service is drawing to the city ... and they will continue to pull visitors who visit his burial site.
One can hope Carolyn. I don't have much faith in the type of people who will show up for that circus though.
I can see riots though from all the streets being closed to the public. I lived in L.A. for 10 years. I know how disturbed it's residents can get.

Perhaps they can get some lions and tiger and bear, oh my, to help control the crowds. Maybe even an elephant or two?
"The family was expected to hold a private funeral at some point at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles. No public funeral procession through city streets was scheduled, and it was not known whether Jackson's body would be at the Staples Center memorial.
In a symbolic convergence of events, however, the circus will be there.
Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey starts a run at Staples Center on Wednesday. In the predawn hours before Jackson's memorial, the elephants will walk from the train station to the arena.'

Forest Lawn is not a private cemetary. I don't know how and if they can keep people out. Forest Lawn is in Glendale, Ca. not L.A.
So tomorrow is the memorial in L.A. When exactly is the funeral? And what celebration of Michael follows that?
Last count $2.5 mil to the lucky people of L.A. part of the broke Ca. system.
Yes it is a circus.....

How you got that from my post is well, just so...Mawish. Rather like how my moving an old post forward for discussion was a "cruel hoax". Gheezus.
I made the point that your economy is sucking and you can't pay CA's bills or workers. IOUs, lol! It's a freakin' CRISES....so don't let it go to waste. You already have your freakin' hands out to the rest of the country to save your state. Figure it out yourselves and pay for it yourselves. And, keep the policies that brought you down on the west coast.
MJ deserves this memorial, imo. I plan to remember him as he was in the 80's. You know, kinda like some fans choose to remember Elvis, who had his own serious issues.
Suck it up, LA. MJ made money, hired employees, spent money, paid hefty taxes. He contributed to your economy for years. Now, give a little back by paying for his memorial. It's only a couple of million added to the red extreme liberal policies bring with them.
Well LA just paid over 1 million to split the cost so the Lakers could have a parade. So somehow they must have the money. The Lakers wanted the city to pay in full but decided to split the cost. The huge amount of police personal was at that function also. I am sure they will have more at this.
Good point, Piglet. And, I DO think the Jackson's should help. They're charging admission, so they can pay for the costs associated with the Staples 'show'. Crowd control, imo, is up to the city/state and the taxes they collect. Problem is, they're not bringing in enough to even run their state. Too many liberal policies 'bring it on' IMO.
My god, how can a person be that high profile, own extravagant properties, make so many millions and not pay taxes. The CA tax people can't be that stupid. Sheesh!

I'm sure he did pay his taxes, as he should have. But that doesn't entitle him to a funeral that shuts down half of a freeway, and ropes off streets, at tax payers expense. It is up to over $5 mil now. Even Swat and the Detectives are covering it. It's a circus..
Could be a holiday for criminals, no police available.

Actually I don't think anyone is entitled to anything such as this. But I honestly think the millions upon millions of his fans made this possible. Without those millions upon millions of fans nothing like this would be possible.

It's being reported that the actual crowd response today is underwhelming. They don't need all those cops and they certainly didn't need all that paid overtime for cop rehearsals over the 4th o' July weekend.
Some media "experts" in LA are wondering if the media "over hyped" the public's interest in MJ and the MJ memorial at Staples Arean.
Well, duh!
There are many empty seats in Staples.

Then I wasn't talking to YOU, carolyn...was I? I copied and pasted INKA's words and then responded to them as I saw fit. You certainly do give yourself MUCH more credit for replies than you deserve.
....is a symptom of psychosis, carolyn, and since I don't live under a rock, you MUST be projecting. You quite obviously need a good psychiatrist and some Thorazine.
Well LA just paid over 1 million to split the cost so the Lakers could have a parade.
And how much do you think the LAKERS bring to L.A. ?
MJ hasn't lived in L.A. for YEARS. Neverland is in Santa Barbara.
We are still talking about taxes aren't we? Taxes do go to the state of CA don't they? You asked Inka to prove if MJ actually did pay taxes and he did and it's easily proven. I am quit sure the LAKERS bring money into not only LA but the state itself.
The hooplah resulting from MJ's funeral and various services will bring far more revenue into the city of L.A. than they will ever pay out.
Who the fuck cares? You people go on and on and on and on about how you don't give a rat's ass about Michael Jackson, and then you belie your own words by posting more, and more, and more, personal diatribes about him.
Frank Sinatra was connected to the mafia... he died, people mourned... I would guess that "Old Blue Eyes" had a hand in far more death and mayhem than Michael Jackson did.
I was reading an article this morning Moniker but can't find it now. The article stated that LA most likely made over 4 million due to tourists coming into the city. Also they said it showed LA in such a good way because everything went sooooo smoothly it was actually great for the city. The LA redevelopment group was projecting more and more money to be made because of this.. So I can't say they didn't make some money back. Plus adding a website for donations now is a plus to help the city out. Like one man said they wouldn't have done if money wasn't to be made off of it!
A Web site was posted Tuesday seeking donations to cover the costs, estimated at between $1.5 million and $4 million, according to Matt Szabo, a spokesman for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
But Jack Kyser, founding economist of the Kyser Center for Economic Research of the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, estimates the city could rake in $4 million from the event, thanks to the throng of media and other visitors who stayed at hotels, ate at restaurants and shopped in Los Angeles.
Kyser believes the city also got a major image boost because the memorial service went off without any major problems. "This thing went off very smoothly," Kyser said. "I think you had some good exposure for downtown and for the entire city."

The event did NOT cost $4M or even your later figure of $5M
The Final Answer:
Michael Jackson memorial cost LA $1.4 million
By CHRISTINA HOAG 10 hours ago
LOS ANGELES (AP) Los Angeles spent $1.4 million to provide security, traffic control and other services for Michael Jackson's memorial service, city officials said as they looked for ways to have others help the financially troubled city pick up the bill.
The amount included $1.1 million in overtime pay for the 4,173 officers who worked to secure Staples Center, Forest Lawn cemetery and other areas that attracted fans and members of the media, the Police Department said in a statement.
And, as I have tried to convey, CA needs to learn to control the state's expenses and manage the state more efficiently and effectively, stop holding their hand out for federal assistance when they make their own bed. This excerpt from the AP article is but one example of how the government spends like drunken sailors on the taxpayer's dime, then asks questions later (sometimes):
In a letter to the emergency management department, Greuel criticized the nearly $49,000 expense for police officers' lunches, which were ordered from a restaurant located 80 miles from Los Angeles.
Greuel said her office called a local sandwich shop that could have provided box lunches for less than $17,500. The purchase would have had the added benefit of supporting a local business, she said.
------------
WHO DID THAT? This government mentality is the stuff you should be worried about since it runs rampant in your state. And, if you did something about it, instead of allowing it to grow over the years, and worsen your state's ecomomic situation, maybe your state wouldn't be in the mess it is in today. Notice, I said maybe. You need to do much more than just reel in the spending. But, that's a start. IMO.
My god, how can a person be that high profile, own extravagant properties, make so many millions and not pay taxes. The CA tax people can't be that stupid. Sheesh!
-------
I do hope you realize who asked that question and to whom you were addressing your remarks.
And, no, the CA tax people aren't that stupid. But, the person who asked the question is judging by the fact that such a stupid question was asked.
NO state should ever be responsible for ANY funeral costs for anyone.
Just their healthcare, housing, food...etc...
sorry....I think it is a hit on the already strapped state of CA...but exactly where does it begin and end?
It begins with the living and ends with the dead.
