they can't argue the issues or commit to a position that reveals their core values...

instead he quizzes you and obfuscates and when you commit to a position and ask him to do the same ...he puts the focus on you instead of offering good faith positions from his own quiver of ideas
it is an old tactic..

because he fears his essence is flawed and he does not want to expose his flaws for dissection
(if he was confident that the essence of his argument was true ...he would be eager to offer and defend it...and it would be easy...it is never difficult to defend what is right

It's called, I believe, "discussion", which, by almost certain assumption, implies more than one person.
1. You don't get to preach, while others simply nod. Nor are you a professor among unruly students, needing only to dispense one-way profundities.
2. Your ideas, thoughts, and opinions must stand on their own merits. Your pedigree may indeed be impressive as a foundation, but you do *not* get to use it as a club. *Nor* is it a substitute for the above.
3. There is a "truth". No, you are not the gatekeeper, self-appointed or otherwise. And in that vein, nobody has annointed you, or appointed you, and you are not entitled to shit above anyone else.
I would submit that these luminaries you cite were unwilling, or unable to adhere to these universal principles. So they quit, which means they moved on to other forums where more people were in serene, smug, and happy agreement. And before you even start, I have *always* been willing to subject my ideas, thoughts, and opinions to the critical process. And what you don't understand is that *this* is the crucible that forges them into means-tested, and peer-reviewed results that I embrace with confidence, something that would appear to permanently piss you off.
Anybody can enjoy a nice discussion among like-minded souls without the inevitable rancor of disagreement. I do it all the time. But in an accurate metaphor, it is also how royal inbreeding begins producing morons. The bloodlines of one's world-view are not improved in such smug and comfortable surroundings.
