National Day of Service? GIVE?

September 15 2009 at 1:21 AM

Moniker  (Login moniker12)

I was, perhaps, asleep. Or I was still optimistically expecting good legislation and policy out of the Obama Era back in March.

But I was hoodwinked. How did this happen? 9/11 A day of tragedy is hijacked into a very lib-dem political "day of service?"

"...To be observed in ways similar to Martin Luther King Day...?"

Screw this!! Screw this!! I'm sorry I wasn't paying attention. Something like this would never pass Congress today. Not now. Not since people started waking up and paying attention.

What'll they do next? Change December 7, 1941 into a day of cleaning up beaches and harbors?

Language to designate 9/11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance has
been included as an important provision in the Generations Invigorating
Volunteerism and Education Act, or GIVE Act, (H.R. 1388), which was introduced
today and authorizes groundbreaking federal support for many innovative
national service programs. Under the GIVE Act, the anniversary of 9/11 would
be observed in ways similar to Martin Luther King Day.  People would
voluntarily engage in remembrance through personal and organized service
activities and reflection, but 9/11 would not become a federal holiday.  U.S.
Senator Charles Schumer (NY) and U.S. Rep. Peter King (NY-3), both of whom
have long supported establishing 9/11 as a national day of service, worked
with GIVE Act sponsors U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (NY-04) and U.S. Rep. George
Miller (CA-07), Chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, to
develop the 9/11 language for the bill.

IMO Peter King said it very well why he thinks it should be a day of service. It doesn't have to be a political thing or a liberal thing either. We came together that day and that is all the day was trying to reflect. What's the problem with that?
Does it mean we still don't mourn for those lost? Absolutely NOT! Does it mean we forget what happened that day? Hell no! Maybe just maybe the feelings we had for that day as being as "one" we felt around this country for a little while. Was well worth it!

"I have been active in seeking a service day for years," said U.S.
Representative Peter King. "America came together in the aftermath of 9/11,
reminding us what it truly means to be part of this great nation. By making
9/11 a national day of service, that same spirit of giving will continue in a
day of remembrance, unity, and selflessness."

President Bush Renews His Post-9/11 Call to Service; Honors the Compassion of Americas Volunteers

Washington DC -- On a sunny afternoon at the White House in front of thousands of volunteer and service leaders, President Bush today renewed the call he made in the wake of the 9/11 attacks for every American to give 4,000 hours or two years of their lives in service to others.

The President gave a broad and passionate speech on the power of volunteers to transform lives and tackle deep-rooted social problems. Recalling the heroism of the first responders and the outpouring of compassion Americans displayed after the terror attacks, the President urged American to rekindle that spirit of neighbor helping neighbor that was so strong after 9/11.

Volunteerism is strong in the country. But the truth of the matter is, the farther we've gotten away from 9/11, that memory has begun to fade, the President said. And my call to people is, there's always a need. You should be volunteering not because of 9/11, but you should be volunteering because our country needs you on a regular basis. And so today I call upon our fellow citizens to devote 4,000 hours over your lifetime in service to your country. You'll become a better person for it, and our society will be more healthy as a result of it. Read the full speech and White House fact sheet here.

Citing real-life examples of volunteers boosting literacy rates, preventing the spread of HIV, and assisting disaster survivors, the President made clear that volunteers and national service participants are key to addressing many of the most pressing social issues at home and abroad.

The President spoke on the White House south lawn to crowd of 1,800 people that included members of Congress, three cabinet secretaries, members of the Presidents Council on Service and Civic Participation and the Corporation for National and Community Service board, state service commission directors, corporate social responsibility executives, and leaders and volunteers from Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, Learn and Serve America, Citizen Corps, the Peace Corps, and Volunteers for Prosperity.

The event looked at the advances in citizen service achieved over the past seven years and forward at the opportunity to grow service and volunteering in the future. The President recalled his inaugural address, where he asked Americans to be citizens, not spectators; citizens, not subjects; responsible citizens, building communities of service and a nation of character. He concluded by saying I am incredibly optimistic about the future of our country. And the reason I am is because I've seen firsthand the love and the compassion and the decency of our fellow citizens.

The President hailed the progress of a new initiative launched by the Corporation and the Presidents Council on Service and Civic Participation seven months ago to challenge corporate America to deliver $1 billion in pro bono service over the next three years. As of today, companies have already pledged more than $400 million towards that goal, with six new commitments totaling $280 million announced at an event today following the Presidents speech. The campaign, newly branded A Billion + Change, was also boosted by new Corporation research spotlighting the untapped potential for pro-bono volunteers.

Turning to AmeriCorps, the President noted the Administrations work to strengthen and expand the program. AmeriCorps members sign up for one-year commitments with the idea of strengthening their communities by teaching adults how to read or improving health care or helping the homeless put a roof over their heads. This is a good program that was started by my predecessor, President Clinton. After 9/11, we tried to make this program more effective -- in other words, to help the dollars allocated go further. Today, more than 74,000 people serve their fellow citizens through AmeriCorps. I have met AmeriCorps volunteers all over our country and they're very inspiring Americans.

He went on to highlight the service of AmeriCorps VISTA alum Emily Greene, who served two terms with the Schools of Hope Literacy Project in Madison, Wisc., where she recruited literacy volunteers to help low-performing students. What a wonderful gift. When somebody says, "How can I help serve America," how about teaching a child to read as a lasting contribution to the future of our country? Madison's public elementary schools are improving, the achievement gap is narrowing. And Emily, it must make you feel great to leave a lasting contribution, and we are glad you're here on behalf of AmeriCorps.

Greene, who met the President before the speech, was a little overwhelmed but very excited about the experience. I am proud to be here representing AmeriCorps and VISTA and my program, said Greene. I loved my AmeriCorps service and I wish everybody could do a year of AmeriCorps.

The President highlighted the success of USA Freedom Corps and related initiatives, including the Presidents Council on Service and Civic Participation, which created the Presidents Volunteer Service Award that has been given to more than 1.1 million Americans. He also highlighted the www.volunteer.gov website, which houses the largest clearinghouse of volunteer opportunities ever assembled, with more than 4 million opportunities easily searchable by zip code and volunteer activity.

In conjunction with todays event, USA Freedom Corps issued a report, "Answering the Call to Service," a comprehensive look at the work of the initiative to improve communities and change lives over nearly seven years under the President's leadership. The report details the response from the millions of individuals who have answered the President's Call to Service and used their power. The report is available at www.volunteer.gov.

The Corporation for National and Community Service improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering. Each year the Corporation engages more than four million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet local needs through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs. First of all, it doesn't say a "political" day of service. Secondly, why do you object to having a day when, as piglet said, we all come together again as we did on 9/11 and do some service for our country, our brothers and sisters -- whoever, whatever may need an extra hand? Thirdly, it's not mandatory. You don't have to perform a day of service if you choose not to.

Yep. Service to the nation is a liberal attribute. Thanks for confirming that, Moniker.

Would you feel better if we made another day, say Dec. 25, national "fuck you, I've got mine" day?

I think the point may be that we don't need a band leader for every frigging facet of our lives.  The government had *nothing* to do with our spasm of nationalism after 9/11.  On the contrary, government sanctioned nationalism can quickly turn into an ugly business.  Moniker's Pearl Harbor example has a point.  Why not just a "day of rememberance"?  We aren't morons, and if this "service" is so pointedly "voluntary", then don't you think that those who choose to serve have that all figured out already?  Again, the edict has a certain nanny-state quality to it.

Re: National Day of Service? GIVE?

People are naturally self serving. They are concerned with their OWN survival, their OWN health, their OWN comfort and their OWN wealth.

Doesn't matter where one lives or what his/her circumstances are. Each person is concerned about self

Next Comes family, friends, and then those he happens to see that draw his attention through need because he is compassionate.

Man is a self-serving creature. And that is why Obama or any leader in any country--Communist, Socialist, Democracy- or whatever calls everyone to forget him/herself for one day and think about his country.

Now, I will leave you to your own conclusions as to why a day of service is called for. Perhaps it is something in the mindset or psyche of Barack Obsma. Could be innocuous or sinister. Could be a one-time thing or something within a greater plan. You can think, can't you?

If the liberal elitists could address the issues and give proof of their assertion, they would not need to call their opponents illiterate and unwaswhed masses who watch Fox News.

Yes, Sable, it is sad becausae I took the first paragrapgh from a column and paraphrased it. It is sad when an intelligent person believes that that those who disagree with him are illiterate and unwashed masses. But there it is. Real piece of purnalistic crap put out by the liberal elite. Now how sad is it?

I did educate myself and I observe3d how the liberal left acted and what they meant by it. And I observed that a group of children in Utah were taugh to pledge allegience to the erath and Obama. Those videos were available but you obviously missed them

Now I've explined what my eduction of the day means, so you tell me whjat I'm missing. I am not missing the hatred spewed by the left wing jounalist who take every opportunity to use words out of context to smear. Notice the firsrt paragraph of the column.

Do you really believe Glenn Becks hates the victims? Or do you recognize what the liberal elitists are doing?

I believe that 9/11 has a certain place in our history. It should not be politicized.

Calling it a day of service under this GIVE blanket is highly political.

Why not a Martin Luther King Day and Day of Service?

Why not George Washington Day and Day of Service? (Oops. They took away George Washington Day. Sorry.)

Why not a July 4 and Day of Service?

The murder of 3,000 Americans and the disruption of our society for years to come is as pure and focused as Pearl Harbor.

And, moonbat idiots, I'll compare my service to this country, and to poor unfortunates, to any service that any of you have done. It's typical that you would attack the "service" part of my complaint as the key issue.

Whatever. I can't expect much more out of you than that.

Why not a Martin Luther King Day and Day of Service?

Martin Luther King Day is already observed by a great many as a Day of Service, I guess you have a problem with that too.  2 days out of the year, one because of a man who was murdered for what he did for civil rights and one to honor those men and women who died in service of their fellow man and others who worked relentlessly in service to go through the rubble, is that really too much, not because you have to (no one is going to arrest you if you do nothing) but because you want to.   If you think you've done your part, Greg, fine and dandy, but to belittle what others do for when and why they do it is nothing less than rude.

http://www.mlkday.gov/about/overview/index.asp

In 1994 Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the King Holiday as a national day of volunteer service. Instead of a day off from work or school, Congress asked Americans of all backgrounds and ages to celebrate Dr. King's legacy by turning community concerns into citizen action. The King Day of Service brings together people who might not ordinarily meet, breaks down barriers that have divided us in the past, leads to better understanding and ongoing relationships, and is an opportunity to recruit new volunteers for your ongoing work.

Participation in the King Day of Service has grown steadily over the past decade, with hundreds of thousands of Americans each year engaging in projects such as tutoring and mentoring children, painting schools and senior centers, delivering meals, building homes, and reflecting on Dr. King's life and teachings. Many of the projects started on King Day continue to engage volunteers beyond the holiday and impact the community year-round.

Although the scope of the event grows every year, many people still are not aware of the service component of the holiday. By encouraging the participation of as many organizations as possible, we hope to make next year's King Day of Service the biggest and best ever, engaging more people in service that honors Dr. King's life and teachings.
