I kinda have to agree with Moniker here. Although not as cynically. It was not in the cards that the Olympics would be held in the U.S. in 2016, you could see that Rio de Janeiro had a leg up.
I can easily see that had President Obama not gone, and we would have lost the Olympics, it would have been an entirely different sort of denigration coming from the right.

I am just glad I was living in Los Angeles the last time Los Angeles hosted the olympics. Saw a couple of the events. The Equestrian event and the Judo event. I am so glad I did not personally see the US disgrace itself during the Boxing event. Stole the elempic Gold from one of our European athletes.

Share Print CommentsA new women's wrestling team in Diwaniya, Iraq, south of Baghdad, is sparking controversy with the countries more traditionally religious and conservative elements, causing four young women to quit the team, the New York Times reports. According to the report, most the girls have embraced their newfound position on Iraq's first ever women's wrestling team wholeheartedly, with hopes to compete at the Olympic level. According to Women's eNews, the event was first introduced to the Summer Olympics in 2004.

But there are many in this town south of Baghdad, which like much of Iraq is religious, conservative and governed largely by tribal tradition, who want the dozen girls and young women on the team to stop wrestling immediately. One tribesman has said they should be "slaughtered" if they continue. A Shia cleric says the team should be banned because wrestling can lead to promiscuity and "transgressions" against Islam.

"They think we are loose girls because we play sports," said Ikram Hamid, 25. In fairness, it is not just female wre-stling that troubles traditionalists. "I have information that male wrestling is problematic, too, because of all the friction that goes on," said Sheik Hussein al-Khalidi, a cleric.
I can easily see that had President Obama not gone, and we would have lost the Olympics, it would have been an entirely different sort of denigration coming from the right.
I don't think the Right would have noticed. When in our history have we either expected a sitting president to go shill for the olympics, or been pissed at one when we weren't awarded the games? One: Chicago put the arm on Obama, because of *their* arrogance. Two: Against the advice of some advisors, Obama gambled because of *his* arrogance. It has come out that the whole rotten pile of them saw the 2016 olympics as just the perfect *cap* to his two terms in office! Considering the result, and subsequent humiliation, it is obvious that he and Chicago clearly deserve each other as a matched set. Let's just be thankfull that it wasn't a round of peace talks.

Not one word of sympathy for the hundreds of their fellow Americans who worked for 3 years on their Olympic presentation. Not one word of sympathy for their deep disappointment. But the glee evinced over what they perceive to be the personal failure of the Obamas and Oprah. Just plain disgusting. I really did not get that from anything I've read or seen. True; some subcultures are infused with some basic distrust and "hatred" of America, no matter what we do or say.
In real life terms, Iran comes the closest to having a state-owned policy of hating America.. otoh, Americans who have traveled to Iran relate wonderful stories of the welcoming nature of most Iranians when they visit. (and they are not required to repudiate or denigrate America prior to getting a warm welcome)
