Well, the best thing I can say about that is it's really premature. What has he actually accomplished to earn this prize?

Even as a candidate he made the case that strength through diplomacy would go further than just the threat of military might in making the US and the world safer.

I agree that it might be premature, but he accomplished more diplomatically as a candidate than Bush did in 8 years as President.

Thank you Jan.  If intentions and desires are all it takes, Miss America would have won it years ago.

I'm sorry, but this decision just dilutes the value of the award.

IMHO that is exactly what has happened. T^here was nothing but talk; therefore, no valid results were placed in evidence.

Bizarre!

October 9 2009, 9:14 AM

While I think Obama has the opportunity and the drive to rack up accomplishments in this area, he's hardly done anything to garner the award. Sheesh! Speaking about setting a low bar!

Score another one for Affirmative Action Folks!

Can anyone name someone who is more deserving of the reward this time around and why they qualify.  Obama has done more in the realm of diplomacy since he became a candidate for the Presidency than anyone that I can think of.  While the results are still in question there is no doubt that his "glib tongue" has opened dialogue where we had none before.

Re: I can hear the wailing now

Actions speak louder than words, "just words".  He spent the last year primarily campaigning.  Some of those promises already broken, or 'changing' his position.  Sorry, but the 'hope' the judges 'feel' he brings to the world, as I read it this morning, isn't really, imo, a concrete action taken to warrant this award as written (willed) by Nobel:

In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses."

And, may I suggest that people read about the other contenders, who lost to Obama?  They have real accomplishments, with world worth.

on another note:

So, what do you all think he will do with the prize money?

what is truly unfortunate about this is

October 9 2009, 9:53 AM

the truly deserving people of the past have had the celebration of their real accomplishments that came through genuine effort and literally lifetimes of real work ...now

the award has been rendered worthless

it is a political trophy

no longer the valuable hard won - true star of accomplishment that it was

Re: I can hear the wailing now

The Nobel peace prize has been a joke for years........

2007
AL GORE The award to Al Gore and the IPCC "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change" fits in with a subset of cosmopolitan frauds, fakers, murderers, thieves, and no-accounts going back about twenty years.

2005
MOHAMED ELBARADEI (joint winner). He's done such a nice job with Iran.

2004
WANGARI MAATHAI The Kenyan ecologist peacefully teaches that the AIDS virus is a biological agent deliberately created by the Man.

2002
JIMMY CARTER JR., former President of the United States of America. A true cosmopolitan, he has undermined the foreign policy of his own country and vouched for the bona fides of tyrants and murderers all over the world. Commenting on the award, Nobel Committee Chairman Gunnar Berge emphasized that the award was meant as a denunciation of American policy toward Iraq. "It should be interpreted as a criticism of the line that the current administration has taken," Berge said. "It's a kick in the leg to all that follow the same line as the United States."

2001
UNITED NATIONS, New York, NY, USA.
KOFI ANNAN, United Nations Secretary General. Among other things, they respectively served as the vehicle for, and presided over, one of the biggest scams in history.

1994
YASSER ARAFAT (joint winner), Chairman of the Executive Committee of the PLO, President of the Palestinian National Authority. He was a cold-blooded murderer both before and after receiving the award.

1992
RIGOBERTA MENCHU TUM, Guatemala. She is the notorious Guatemalan faker and author, sort of, of I, Rigoberta Menchu. Like President Obama, she is a memoirist of distinction.

1988
THE UNITED NATIONS PEACE-KEEPING FORCES New York, NY, U.S.A. Notwithstanding rapes and sex abuse committed by the team in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and the Congo, still doing fine work all over the world.

1976
BETTY WILLIAMS, United Kingdom, founder of the Northern Ireland Peace Movement (later renamed Community of Peace People), who in later years repeatedly called for the assassination of President George Bush. How peaceful can you get?

1973
LE DUC THO (with Henry Kissinger) for the 1973 peace with honor bequeathed to the fortunate people of Vietnam.

I would suggest you review winners of the prize PRIOR to 2001. The idiocy started long before Bush was around.

It took Mother Teresa a lifetime of suffering and giving and service before she won the Nobel Peace prize. Now, she really accomplished something.

Doing your own rewrite of history now, poetse?  You think you can prove that Obama said that terrorism doesn't exist any more?  Just exactly what do you believe he considers al qaida to be?  Are they still operating in Afghanistan?   Why would he single out Pakistan if terrorism no longer existed?   You can't even tie your lies together because they are in direct opposition to each other.

Re: I can hear the wailing now

Well....Actually the Obamaites do not use the term "War On Terror" any longer due to Obama's "kinder and diplomatic
approach and they have done all but line-up to kiss Iran's crazy extremist ass! Obama is lost... he is inept at anything except bullshitting his way through life like he always has done...and people, that smooth talk doesn't cut it with people that would if given the chance kill every single man woman and child in this country...and if given the opportunity do so by hacking their heads off at every major sports facility in the country or right in the streets! The Obamaites have their socialist dream but the Islamic terrorist have their dream of an Islamic world and since Obama refuses to see all of this or due to his total ineptness cannot realize that the Islamic extremist will strike again and he is making it damn easy for them to do so!

One small footnote on the above statement...when the terrorist strike and there are dead Americans scattered in the streets of this country the terrorist will not be the only ones with blood on their hands....and they will not be the only ones that will pay for it either! Wake-up people!

James Earl Carter? And why? The Carter Center has done more for "world peace" in the last year than has President Obama.

And this is coming from someone who is no huge fan of James Earl Carter! "Jimmy" Carter has become far more "presidential" now that he ever was as President.

From an article posted earlier:

Compare this to Greg Mortenson, nominated for the prize by some members of Congress, whom the bookies gave 20-to-1 odds of winning. Son of a missionary, a former Army medic and mountaineer, he has made it his mission to build schools for girls in places where opium dealers and tribal warlords kill people for trying. His Central Asia Institute has built more than 130 schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan - a mission which has, along the way, inspired millions of people to view the protection and education of girls as a key to peace and prosperity and progress.

And this is just one of the 205 people who were in the running for the Nobel Peace Prize. Surely, even the liberals have to admit this man has done more than the President?
