This may be a picutre post card of things to come. I am hoping it corrects itself as I wouldn't want to see NY lose it's magic for so many. Also have to think about the ones leaving to go to other states coming in and voting that state to become just like NY. When will the powers that be ever learn that taxing people to death is not the answer.
Tax refugees staging escape from New York

New Yorkers are fleeing the state and city in alarming numbers -- and costing a fortune in lost tax dollars, a new study shows.
More than 1.5 million state residents left for other parts of the United States from 2000 to 2008, according to the report from the Empire Center for New York State Policy. It was the biggest out-of-state migration in the country.
The vast majority of the migrants, 1.1 million, were former residents of New York City -- meaning one out of seven city taxpayers moved out.
"The Empire State is being drained of an invaluable resource -- people," the report said.
What's worse is that the families fleeing New York are being replaced by lower-income newcomers, who consequently pay less in taxes.
Overall, the ex-New Yorkers earn about 13 percent more than those who moved into the state, the study found.
And it should be no surprise that the city -- and Manhattan in particular -- suffered the biggest loss in terms of taxable income.
The average Manhattan taxpayer who left the state earned $93,264 a year. The average newcomer to Manhattan earned only $72,726.
That's a difference of $20,538, the highest for any county in the state. Staten Island was second, with a $20,066 difference.
It all adds up to staggering loss in taxable income. During 2006-2007, the "migration flow" out of New York to other states amounted to a loss of $4.3 billion.
The study used annual US Census reports, which showed which states had increased population, combined with Internal Revenue Service data, which show which states, cities and counties had lost people.
While New York City and the state were the losers, the Sunshine and Garden States were winners. more than 250,000 New Yorkers who lived in and around the city fled to Florida. Another 172,000 city taxpayers ended up in New Jersey.
Why all the moving vans?
The center, part of the conservative Manhattan Institute, blames the state's high cost of living and high taxes.
The study also revealed surprising details about how city residents moved from borough to borough.
Manhattan lost 64,480 taxpayers, and more than half -- 34,383 -- went to The Bronx.
Brooklyn lost 68,951 taxpayers -- including 43,688 who went to Staten Island.
The study also had some good news. The peak loss of New Yorkers was in 2005, when nearly 250,000 residents left the state. But last year, only 126,000 left, the lowest figure over the eight-year period.

Did anyone bother to ask the people who moved, why they were moving or is everyone just suppose to believe a group of people who drew their own conclusions? The number of people leaving NY seems to have peaked in 2005. Let me see... who was POTUS in 2005? Is it possible the some people saw and knew that their homes value was over-inflated and seeing this made the decision to "cash in" before prices fell? Does anyone really know where these people moved to? I understand that some states gain in population and some states lose, that happens all the time. I know a couple that owned a home in IN. another in FL. and yet another in CA.. At the end of 2003 and the beginning of 2004 they sold the homes that gave them a hefty profit. Those homes were in CA. and FL., the IN. home value was stagnant so they chose to keep it for now. Are the people (a conservative group) that came to these conclusions about the wealthy people of NY certain that the the people who once lived borough X definitely moved to borough Y? I saw nothing in this report that explains exactly how they arrived at their conclusions.

Touchey...Jim. However I am an example of the migration from Los Angeles, 2nd however in support of what Jim was saying NY is still the most populous Megapolis in the United States followed by Los Angeles, and finally Chicago.

I wonder if you even read the whole post? How did you miss the paragraph posted here. This is the worry as to who is coming in and replacing those ex tax payers. They make less and will probably be a drain sooner or later on services. Only time will tell what this all means to the great state of N.Y.

No need to worry ! If those people who moved in can afford NYC they will get the money back in other ways! I bet the majority of those who moved from NYC to NJ are still driving back into the city paying all the tolls or taking mass transit also. Still keeping the jobs they had and are now paying NY and NJ taxes.

Are the families fleeing because their high paying jobs have been sent over seas? Are they in search of a job or are they making the decision to retire and move to a warmer climate (FL.) or have they all of a sudden become aware of the taxes they pay in NY? BTW Like everyone else I read it twice because it's a post within a post... a double post.

Oh you mean people like Rush Limbaugh? He went to Fla. Piglet and can broadcast from there. He doesn't need to commute. How many more are doing the same? You don't know if what you wrote is true or not. You are speculating [sp], nothing more. Without proof you may as well have not written it.

Packed to the gills with people all over the place. No worries here!
Same here. The stories of the death of NYC are grossly exagerated. Too fucking crowded here to begin with.

Evelyn I am talking about the people who moved from NY to NJ like you article states
"Another 172,000 city taxpayers ended up in New Jersey."
I said I bet the majority of them are commuting back and forth from NJ to NY and paying taxes now to both states. Just in my section of town over 26 people have moved in from NYC in the past 3 years. Yup they are still going back and forth paying taxes and paying tolls and paying bus and train fare! They still continue to work in the city! So they are getting money into the city no matter what!
What would I care about Rush commuting? He moved to FL! I wasn't speaking about FL was I? Why would he drive here from FL to work?
BTW where is this article found? I can't seem to find it in any NYC paper at all? I found on the Post blog area but not as an article. They said the same stuff about people leaving Jersey. Meanwhile this article you posted has 172,000 people coming into Jersey

Well, Rush paid so much in taxes he finally said enough is enough. Who will make up these taxes, piglet......why you of course and others who may finally say I've had enough too.
The person who wrote this article, Andy Soltis, is a columnist for the NY Post.

Not me! I don't live in NYC.
Again with Rush. I wasn't speaking at all about Rush. Do you think he is the only one in nyc who paid high taxes? No he isn't and plenty of wealthy people are still around and didn't get fed up and didn't leave the city or state like he did.

BTW did he sell his condo yet? Did he put it on the market yet? As of August he still hadn't put his penthouse on the market. I mean he himself admits he only spends about 15 days in the city to start with. All that huffing and puffing he did about leaving the city back in March I still can't find where he sold off his NYC real estate. hmmm maybe he didn't leave?
Like many were speculating when he started this rant back in March. It would cost him money to move his alternative station. The taxes would only cost him about $60,000 per year and were only lasting 3 years. Out of his 38 million he earns per year. So if he didn't leave because I can't find that he did leave. Maybe he realized it would cost him in the long run? Besides like he said he only came here to work when it was hurricane season! Not like he spent his life here!

Roby the snipe at Rush's weight was uncalled for. More evidence of the intolerance of the dems. He is over 6'2"'s feet tall and has lost alot of weight. He can carry weight better than the average person because of his tallness. How tall are you. Could there be a little envy mixed in with your criticism? I guess it time will tell if it is indeed a dog and pony show when you notice you are paying more taxes. It only stands to reason that if the wealthy leave you are going to have a very poor state, especially if you are left with people who don't pay any taxes, mixed with the middle class who are baring the load, like you.

So now it jumped up to a million from last years 126,000? Is that a million for this year or the past how many years?

The third world state of NY will celebrate Halloween tonight with the biggest parade and street partying in the country. We live 1 block from the parade route and when they break a few blocks north, everyone passes in front of our building to head for the Village and the hundreds of parties. We hang out under the building marquee with a bottle of wine and a bunch of friends and neighbors to watch the passing parade of over a quarter million revelers in costume. The parade is too crowded, so we do this and have a ball.

So I missed it by an inch or two. Maybe I thought he was taller because he LOOKS taller to me. I checked on Google and they said 5'11". Does that make you feel better Maw.
Who called you a 'small turd'? I didn't. I don't used crude words like that to describe anyone, so you'll have to check that out too. That's the kind of talk you like, Maw, but I wasn't born in a cess pool like you.
I'm not into any thing to do with drugs, so once more you are wrong. Fat doesn't bother me as I have many 'fat' friends and I can tell you they are much nicer than you. Since I can still bend over and touch my toes I don't worry about fat either.

Yes we will be a third world country Sufer with this president printing money every day. We have a 12 trillion dollar debt that is the direct result of Obama's spending. You can't blame this on Bush, Hoover, or Harding. It is now strickly Obama's mess. Thank God Al Gore didn't run this country. There is no way any thinking person could possibly contend that the nationaldebt is all Obama's fault.
I seriously doubt that is what you intended to say.
And Unfortunately the national debt which has been created by every President since Jackson is not just Obama's mess. It is also every American's and we are going to be taxed at higher rates as a result.

Did Rush ever sell that property here in NY? I mean he did say he was leaving right?
All I have ever heard Rush say was that he was taxed for every minute he *worked* in NY by the state income tax entity. And there was some stink about him being a "resident". He apparently went to war with them over the residency thing, and also what constituted "work" in his particular case. He left the impression that he lost the war, and paid them a ton of money. He now "lives" in FL, and does his program from there. It's unclear to me at least, what he has ever done with his NY holdings, or whether he has established a way to make tax-free "non-working" visits to NY.

I can't seem to find any articles saying he did. I thought you would know!

The only public vow I remember him making on the air was to not pay another dime in NY state income tax. I would have to assume that all the other particulars not pursuant to that vow would be of no consequence. I suppose property tax might be an equal issue for him, but maybe not, I don't know. I listen to him on average of maybe twice a week when I have time, and I check his web site for links to news.

He did claim he was going to sell his alternative station up here. I believe he mentioned Texas as the location he wanted to move it to?
I really don't see why actually. He hardly spends time here unless of a hurricane.
Of course some say it would cost him to leave NYC more so than any savings he would gain. Maybe he changed his mind?
When I am there working I pay whatever, you know, my rate is based on income for that day in New York. And I try to go as little as possible. If it weren't for hurricanes down here, I would never go up there. New York is the escape valve in case hurricanes are showing up in our area, because of the loss of electricity. So I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I'm going to look for an alternative studio somewhere outside New York, perhaps Texas -- another no-income-tax state -- and I'm going to get the hell over there, when a hurricane starts coming our way, 'cause I told Mayor Bloomberg: I'll be the first to lead the way. You know, this is just... I'll sell my apartment. I'll sell my condominium. I'm going to get out of there totally, 'cause this is just absurd, and it's ridiculous -- and it isn't going to work. It's punishing the achievers for the mistakes and the lack of discipline on the part of a bunch of corrupt politicians that have run that city and state into the ground for I don't know how many years -- and I, for one, am not going to take the blame for it.

He did mention Texas at one time, but as far as I know, he was just thinking out loud, and nothing ever became of it. I don't think he actually owns any stations, but I could be wrong. He is actually a performer under contract to some mega-owner like Infinity Broadcasting, who sells his program as a franchise, as well as airing him on their own stations. As much money as he is raking in, however, he could be investing anywhere in anything.
