the less effect the regulator will have. If you have a gun attached to a large tank, then each shot is only reducing the overall pressure by a miniscule amount. The regulator is of potential value in managing the smaller volumes that are usually onboard.
I haven't heard about any particular failures with regulators, and can't image that being an issue. Most are very simple devices.
