I have one and it works fine. It is a press fit and easy to remove when using the magazine. The best technique seems to be rolling the pellets in from the side.
Yeah I agree, why does it cost more than a magazine?? The one I received also had a plastic bushing that seals up the gap that exists between the bolt and the breach. Benjamin mentions in the instructions that installing the bushing helps prevent a pellet from falling in the rifle and gumming things up. I have a .177 mrod but I'm not sure you need one for the .22 because the pellet is larger.
.22 single shot tray made by Crosman works good for me. Sometimes I like shooting polymag and EunJin pellets, and the single shot tray makes that possible.
Someday I'm going to modify my magazines so I have the 10 shot repeatability...but for now the single shot tray allows me to shoot long pellets that dont fit in the magazines.
A friend just got the Crosman and we had a chance to try them side by side. IMO (for all that's worth....) the Crosman tray was easier to use. The sides are lower and the angle into the trough less. You can see easier and the pellets tend to flip around less. Not that Grant's tray is at all bad, it's just Mike and I both found the difference. I also had one flip around and go nose first into the hole for the bolt. I was lucky and was able to turn the gun over and shake it out but if I'd bumped the bolt and bent the pellet it might have been ugly.
As to the price, it's no doubt a matter of volume. Every Marauder gets at least one mag (I bet the average is several), a small fraction get SS trays. If money is tight, I'd suggest Grant's tray ($8 IIRC) and make do? I'm not thinking of replacing mine.
