Benchrest free recoil vs shouldering stock...

Free recoil is resting rifle on bags, and just using trigger hand to make shot without shouldering stock...

Just tried two groups ...one just using my trigger hand with rifle on bags.....the other shouldering like i always have been on bags......
...as my rifle is zeroed at 50 yards,I just used holdunder using same POA for both groups from 25 yards..

Tonight I'm going to change my set up and add a stop in front of my tack driver bag...and use some baby powder on "bag surface" inway of stock forearm....then shoot about twenty groups for each method..

But for now,I got vertical stringing on the free recoil group.....that may be variance in eye relief as my 850 rifle is bolt action and I have to re-aquire sight picture..or lack of front stop or both ???
The target is a download to 8x11 and reduced from actual size..so bulls are 7/8" vice 1 3/8"....free recoil group was 5/16" and the other one was 3/16" ctr-ctr...

Going to figure out a stop first...so I can return rifle to same position each time between shots..then do a more detailed test...

Discovered using rear bag on heel of stock causing group spread...moved rear bag back on stock, and group pattern tightened up...

I tried Kodiaks and seems JSB's have an edge....but just a very slight one.

When I get my benchrest set up done,I'll post more..there is some advantage to "free recoil"..
and so far the 850 trigger mod is working very well during these tests. My goal is to see how tight I can get groups consistantly.

I like JSB's too. I think the pellets are just more consistent in size, shape and weight
and it does give them the edge.
Please do me favor? shoot a group or two with Crosman hollow points (no further
than 25yds) just give them a quick check to make sure they aren't bent before you start.
I think it would be interesting. IIRC that 177 of yours stacked those things at 20yards.

..hollow points...but here is a .25" group shot from my stock 850 CO2 several months ago using RWS Super H Points at 20 yards...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

I'll get some Crosmans and test in the 850 HPA...think Walmart has them..

EDIT: Got some Crosmam Hollow Points at Walmart. Here is a 5 shot group from 25 yards using my 850 HPA .177..(below).It was 100 F and I was getting a mirage in scope shooting into morning sun and dropped one shot low....LOL
First time shooting the Crosman HP's...they definately have a better head design than the RWS Super H Points...!!!

Group is CTR-CTR..

I'm going to test these at 50 yards first chance I get...
