already happening
by JamesIt's already happened and will doubtless happen again in a class between the species (us and them) over food sources. There is an interesting and telling story out of Hanobia where the gun toting deer poachers exercising their God given right to kill anything that moves, basically baited and brought up a population of food seeking interlopers who then insulted the humans habitat terrifying the families and basically starting a standoff. Observers came in and tried to help by basically urging an end to the excessive process of overharvesting deer and carcass missmanagement, all the while pointing out that the spotlights and gun reports were like a dinner bell being rung load and clear. It's like if you found out at the end of Jaws that the "monster" came into the bay because of over chumming, or if in India they baited tigers with lamb slaughter while playing Led Zepplin and then a kid gets killed and someone says "Zepplin music makes tigers like children". In this case which will ultimately be heard by everyone I'm sure, the investigators were careful to hide behind the warriors family members so they wouldn't get their ass shot off in the melee (thats French for general confused fighting for those who don't own a dictionary). This story will invoke a great deal of hubbub, naysaying, and blabber jab from the uninitiated and from the many arm chair theorists and pontificators who will say that everyone misshandled the event and or were incompetent - I beg to differ but time will tell. Everyone involved was scrambling to handle a very, very unique and powerfully exciting set of circumstances - perhaps the most intense event in the history of this subject matter and research. No amount of after the fact analysis will substitute for a good well thought out cooperative effort to get back out in the field with more money, better equipment, teams of smart level headed individuals and a great deal of intestinal fortitude! Next time there will be thermal imaging equipment and probably big guns but hopefuly less shooting of lead and more of images. Don't forget your snow peas and some deer liver.
As far as the clash between the species - it will continue until humans can step up to the fact that, like it or not, we must become better stewards and caretakers of the planet God gave us - then there will be food aplenty. Godspeed.Posted on Jun 17, 2003, 5:41 PM
