data folder doesn't disappear, it's being phased out.

The data folder does not self-destruct, so if you just keep updating it will still be on your disk. Even if you take the latest stable release in zip format (v0.91) it still contains the data folder. Only if you start clean and you download a future stable version newer than v0.91, then the data folder might be gone.
