"Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth" (John 17:17 NIV).
Sanctify means
"set apart for special use." A Christian is to be distinct from the worlds sin, its values, and its goals which is why it is said that we are in the world, but not of the world.
The means of this sanctifying work is Gods truth. It is communicated in the Word, which is both personal and propositional. As the message about Jesus was heard, believed, and understood, the disciples hearts and minds were changed. This change in their thinking resulted in changes in how they lived their lives. This holds true of Christians today. As we appropriate Gods Word into our lives, we are sanctified (set apart) for God and changed in our living in order to honor God (see John 15:3). Just as Gods message set the apostles apart from the world so that they would do His will, and not satans, so too, it sets us as Christians apart from the world so that we would do His will, and not that of satan. This is why it is important for Christians to study the whole counsel of God and let His Word dwell in us and permeate our very being (Colossians 3:16).

"Some bring God's curse on them by marking off part of the Bible, calling it erroneous, uninspired, less than the very Word of God." - Dr. John R. Rice
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God to salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." (Romans 1:16)
