Verse of The Day For Wednesday, December 17, 2008

"But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:20-21 NIV).

Joseph had discovered that Mary was pregnant and he knew the child was not his, so he planned to send her away. The Mosaic Law required stoning for adultery (Deut. 22:23-24) and he assumed that she had engaged in some hanky-panky before hand and had gotten pregnant as a result, and was going to send her away quietly to avoid her being put to death, as well as the stigma of being pregnant out of wedlock. An angel appeared to Jseph in a dream and explained to him that Mary was to give birth to the Messiah and that her pregnancy was the result of a creative act of the Holy Ghost. He was to be called "Jesus" which means "Savior" for He would save those who follow Him from their sins. He is indeed Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14) for He was God manifested in human form (1Timothy 3:16). Imagine God loving mankind so much that He became one of His own creations in order to bring about our redemption back to Him! Thank you Lord Jesus for making salvation available to all who will reach out and accept it!
