"You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you" (Psalm 86:5 NIV).
In his prayer David earnestly requested that God hear, answer, guard, save, and have mercy on, as well as bring joy to him because of his poor and needy condition. Essentially in these requests he desired that God preserve him (compare with Psalm 25:20) by His mercy. David called himself a servant who trusts in the Lord, one who lifts up his soul to God (compare with Psalm 25:1). David's prayer was based on the fact that God is kind, ready to forgive, and abounding in love (compare with Psalm 86:15; Exodus 34:6). God will forgive sin and lift up those who are poor in spirit if they would come before Him in repentance and a humble attitude.

"Some bring God's curse on them by marking off part of the Bible, calling it erroneous, uninspired, less than the very Word of God." - Dr. John R. Rice
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God to salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." (Romans 1:16)
