"See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ" (Colossians 2:8 NIV).

The church at Colossae was overtaken by a heresy that is believed to be an early form of Gnosticism, and Paul's epistle to the Colossians was for the purpose of addressing this heresy and correcting the Colossian Christians. Our eyes are to be fixed upon Jesus, neither looking to the left, nor the right which would represent straying from the truth, nor should we give attention to the pratings of false teachers who would otherwise deceive and take captive the minds of those brethren who are babes in Christ, or those who for whatever reason are not well grounded in the Word.
