Gino was justed recently named to the USHL Central scouting staff so his kid will probably play in the USHL someday. This is another tool he will use to recruit players for his team. |

| Re: Last Year? | March 10 2008, 10:30 PM |
i don't see how gino being a ushl scout could be bad... he played in the NHL, knows more about hockey than any other person in st. louis (maybe less than a couple of alums). and whats wrong with him using that as a recruiting tool, he knows more people in hockey than sanderson, behan, hazelton and any other midget coach in the city put together |

Being part of Central Scouting is no big deal. The main purpose for Central Scouting is to put together lists for the USHL showcases in April. Most of the teams have their own scouting staffs. Central Scouting does not draft players, they just recommend. Gino being part of Central Scouting is a good thing but I doubt it will have any effect on his son playing the in USHL. |

11:01- wouldn't that be up to the kid and his parents to decide? I mean aren't these kids old enough to decide what is important to them and whether or not they can play for their High School team if they work out their schedule with the HS coach?
Why would anybody who coaches a kid at AAA deny that kid the fun of playing for his HS team if that kid really wanted to?
The number of control freaks who also happen to be hockey coaches is astounding.
Before you jump all over me, I think it okay if a coach tells a player at AAA that the AAA team has to be the priority. Most people who play AAA don't need to be told that anyway, which goes to the original question which is why wouldn't a coach want his players to be able to have the fun of playing for his school team?

I had a couple conversations with Paul this past season about the U16 team. I think he actually believed the stuff he was saying. We will have to wait a couple years when these kids go to college to se if it was worth it. I personally would not take that leap with my son. I was at the game this winter when SLUH beat CBC at Affton. I wonder who will have the better memories from this past season - the boys who played for SLUH in that game or Joe Cella and Conner Frick who quit to play U16. I wish all of those U16 boys who played for Paul and Gino the best of luck. I would love to see 2 or 3 kids every year get drafted by the NHL. That would probably mean that 10 or 15 would have to be playing D1 or higher hockey each year. |

Me thinkith you have drinkith to much Kool aid . I kid does measure his accomplishemnts in high school. A young man maybe in college and a mature man in business/career/family.
Don't steal a kids childhood. I wish my biggest concern was passing a history exam. That is what high school kids think about along with girls and playing high school sports. Maybe if they are elite enough they will have college coaches making them an offer to play a college sport.
Do we really need coaches selling high school freshmen and sophmores they will be offered college scholarships at that age and worse yet parents believing it as well?
College coaches and pro scouts find kids if they are good enough. You need to play and practice at a high level but to play 80 + games and forego your high school expereince is more than a little niave thinking by most of those families.

College on a hockey scholarship is a pipe dream they will have to play JR a for a couple years,to get looked at, by that time they should allready have two years of college. So Paul is selling the kids and the parents a line of crapola. A lot of people spend seven years at college and they are called doctors. |

| Re: u16's | March 11 2008, 5:11 PM |
I think the main idea of them not to play high school hockey is not to not have of those o so precious high school memories (who gives a shit if you win the state championship?) the point of not playing in that goon-fest is so the kids do not get hurt and are in top shape for when they play in front of those college and jr scouts. How many scouts were at the state championship game? (zero) How were at games Gino and Paul set up for the kids?(alot).
I fail to see why everyone is bitching about this. Highschool hockey sucks, these kids are serious about hockey and want to play college and hopefully in the NHL. Stop bitching about it. |

| Re: u16's | March 11 2008, 5:18 PM |
If they are afraid of getting hurt maybe the little benders should play chess. Lets face it for 99.9 % high school will be the high lite of there hockey life. With all the scouts you say looked at them how many received a sholarsip to a D1 school? oh thats right they are 9th or 10th graders and have 2-3 more years of high school |

| Re: u16's | March 11 2008, 5:16 PM |
The Cavalini's think they are in Canada. If we were in the great white North, their way of thinking would be the norm, however the talent pool would probably be much deeper. I like the comment about the memories, nothing is more memorable or fun than playing in front of your peer group whether it be in soccer, hockey or club racquetball. Unfortunately, those kids who were convinced will never get to experience that and it's a shame.
If the kid is good enough, has the right attitude, and receives the right training/coaching he will be found by scouts without his parents having to spend thousands of dollars to get him noticed. The AAA program in this town is a solid program however, is publicized as the best of the best which is simply not the case because the normal induvidual can not afford to have their kid play to the tune of $10000+ per year.
Let the kid be a kid and if he's good enough he will get the opportuites to play elsewhere and further his career. |

| Re: u16's | March 11 2008, 6:08 PM |
no scout will ever come to missouri to find players, so your statement is so false... scouts won't even go to central states games or jr b's games
and up in the "great white north" high school hockey is comparable to in minnesota and the scouts come watch them play because the real players there play highschool as well as their aaa teams. here in st. louis however highschool hockey is a joke; there is only 1 line of kids on a team that can actuallly play and the rest are a bunch of benders who don't know what the fuck they are doing.
and for just so you know, alot of kids have scholarships that are in 9th and 10th grade, and i promise you not one of them wasted their time playing highschool hockey (they played where the real hockey is, aaa) |

he can't coach his kid next year because the club knew he was doing it to get his kid noticed and finally they said your kid isn't good enough so they kicked him so he goes and forms a aaa tourney team just so his kid is playing aaa. the sad thing is his kid is going to be crushed when college or the real world hits and daddy can't get him on the team. he's setting his kid up for a fall. The other crime is that the kids on his team this year wil probably follow him to the rogue aaa tourney team and leave the blues high and dry. |

Simple. The only reason shown so far is to be sure a certain parent, I mean coach, can be sure his kid gets placed on one of them.
Do you have any other reason why this would be good? Besides the usual BS about talent level and exposure. Unless you can state why this is good, most people see why (read above) and don't like the politics involved. |

| Re: u16's | March 13 2008, 4:39 PM |
Here is one problem. WHo will the kid try out with first. IF he trys out for JRB he is done. Noone will want him then. Next which AAA team do you try out with. They will not have tryouts at the same time. If you tryed out for the Cav. team and made it but wanted to also try out with the BLues Sanderson would probably cut you right away. If you got cut by either team would the other still want you. They would be forced to take you like it or not because at that point the talent pool will be way down. The only way it could work is to bring in kids from out of the area. Then you could pull it off. |

If this is the only age level that a second AAA team is being proposed than I see it as nothing more than a parent looking out for his own kid. If this is going to be taken seriously at all it must be for all age levels accross the board. Personally I don't think there is enough talent to field two competative AAA teams in this city. |
