Not if the CA's stern is on fire...
Time; very soon after the bomb impacted (1-2 minutes or so?).
One way to verify both the (possible) smoke and the time is the location of the DE RUYTER. Is the location of the DE RUYTER relative to the HOUSTON (when the bomb hit) recorded in any of the accounts/documentation? Was there also a miss to the HOUSTON's stern at roughly the same time she was hit?
