Response to what's in a turret

Nelson,

I don't believe the RN or Commonwealth navies mounted 4-inch guns in turrets, but there were instances of the larger 4.5-inch guns so mounted.

Twin 4.5-inch/45 caliber QF guns, Mark 4, were mounted in the RP 10, Mark 4 turret (about 45 short tons). I think earlier versions were first used on HMS SAVAGE, but I'm uncertain of the exact evolution because SAVAGE seems to have had, at one time or another, both single-gun turrets or mountings and twin-gun turrets. Perhaps another Commonwealth contributor can clarify this point.

Postwar, twin 4.5-inch/45 caliber QF guns, Mark 5, were mounted in the RP 41 Mark 6 turret (about 49 short tons) and perhaps the RP 41 Mark 7 also, but I'm hazy on the details of this latter twin mounting.

Thanks for keeping us on the straight and narrow with the breech versus breach distinction, and for correctly using data as a plural noun.

Kit
