That answer would go to the root of the question, why were they diverted in the first place? I think Nelson described the voyage fairly. From Hawaii, by way of Suva to Brisbane. The Phoenix Island would lie more or less in the path enroute to Suva. The reasoning behind the diversion order seems unclear.
