..the name of COL Hodgson, and the reference to Sec of State for Dominion Affairs. The source was probably Australian.
"COL Hodgson" was W. R Hodgson, the onetime Australian Secretary of the Dept. of External Affairs. In June of 1940 LT COL Hodgson had been involved in some equally nutty "secret talks" with the Japanese consul in Australia, Akiyama Masatoshi, who was then offering to sell Japanese fighter planes to the Australians in order to help protect their interests & "improve trade relations" [read: obtain badly-needed strategic materials from Australia]...another example of the Japanese foreign policy strategy of attempting to drive wedges between the Western powers.
