Response to Secret Japanese Overture(s) To NEI Government
I came across another vague reference to this matter--or tangentially material to it--in ADM Hart's original "Narrative" and thought it worth noting. On Jan 3rd Hart travelled (via train) from Surabaja to Batavia for a meeting with the Gov-Gen (Van Starken---?), Hubertus Van Mook, and Helfrich. (It was at this conference--not a happy one for Hart, who was exhausted after his long sub trip from Manila to Surabaja--that Hart was informed for the first time that he'd been announced as ABDAFLOAT, etc., and was thereupon bombarded with uncomfortable questions by the Dutch and the press about his 'plans'...)
During the meeting, Hart records that His Excellency Gov-Gen Van S. announced that "if the Japanese proposed the NEI Dutch withdraw from the war & resume commercial relations with Japan" this proposal would be denied. At the very least this suggests that something had been broached along those lines somewhere behind the scenes. Beyond this reference in passing, Hart says nothing more.
