A very long shot. Perchance do you remember ever meeting Maurice Robison, who was with 9th Marines (exact battalion and company unknown) from 16 August 1944 to 18 March 1945? He's listed as "Maurice L. Robinson" on page 327 in THE NINTH MARINES A HISTORY OF THE NINTH MARINE REGIMENT IN WORLD WAR II.
He joined the regiment as a replacement on Guam and later landed on Iwo Jima. He would not talk about his wartime service very much with me (my father was in the 5th Engineer Battalion - 5th Marine Division and was also on Iwo Jima).
After the war, he was the Sheriff of Caldwell County, Missouri and was still serving as Sheriff when I was elected Prosecuting Attorney in 1978.
