Response to M.S. Bloemfontein
This is all very interesting! Every year on this date (Dec 3) I find myself remembering sailing out of San Diego harbor on the Bloemfontein with a Marine replacement battalion (6th?). We arrived in Noumea uneventfully on the 21st. My memory of her is of a solidly built, even comfortable (!!) ship which had been "rode hard and put away wet." The word was that she had already made several trips to SoPac. There was a large amount of deck cargo and quite a bit of dirt on deck. We were happy the second day out when we were joined by the USS St. Louis (CL20).
