Response to Admiral Helfrich
Among the areas where Helfrich appears to have ignored or of which he may have been unaware, are
Both HOUSTON and PERTH were very short of main battery ammunition and hoped there would be some at Tandjong Priok. There was none. Both cruisers ran out in the Soenda Straits battle.
During the Java Sea battle, once Commander Binford had executed his torpedo attack on the enemy he reported 'torpedoes expended' to Doorman, and was detached to rearm, supposedly in Soerabaja. In fact, FORD and POPE had taken the Asiatic Fleet's reserve of only 17 Mark VIIIs from BLACK HAWK just days before. Aside from POPE's load, there were no reloads for Binford's DDs.
With the American VADM Glassford working closely with him, it seems unlikely Helfrich might have been unaware of the near-exhaustion of allied resources.
